IEX (Infinity Extender) – run EEex mods on Windows and Linux (BG2EE / EET 2.7.3)

Hi all,

IEX is a new engine extender for BG2EE and EET 2.7.3. It runs mods written for EEex without changing them, on Windows and Linux. The first public test version, 0.4.0, is out.

Why another extender? EEex is Windows-only, and Linux players have no way to run EEex mods. IEX gives the same Lua API that mods use, built on its own engine layer for both systems. I see it as complementary to EEex, not as a competitor.

What it does today
  • EEex mods on Windows and Linux. Tested with full installs of Tweaks Anthology (48 EEex components), Bardic Wonders, Shadow Magic, The Artisan's Kitpack, Infinity UI++, Bubb's Spell Menu Extended, Tactics Remix, Skills and Abilities, StickLuaFunctions, BG Pathfinding Redux, BuffBot, EEex Remote Console and SadoEE: 116 of 116 components, on both systems. A static scan of 49 EEex mods covers about 90% of the EEex calls they make. When a call is missing, the mod keeps working and IEX lists the call in
    missing_api.txt

    .
  • 60 fps with frame interpolation: the game draws at your refresh rate while the logic stays at its normal speed.
  • HD area tiles (2x / 4x / 8x): game data stays at 1x, so saves and mods are unaffected. IEX uses the same file convention as InfinityEngine-Enhancer, and there's a guide for pack authors.
  • Engine fixes: 11 fixes from the EE Fixpack "code fixes" list (opcode 182, weapon speed / WSPECIAL, SPLPROT, TRAPLIMT, op33, op206/232/256 messages, HP tables, Simulacrum, XP, event triggers). All are on by default, and each one can be turned off.
  • Unlimited class spell lists: mods can add any number of wizard and priest spells past the 99-per-level limit. Spell slots 51-99 come with the bundled SpellSlots mod.
  • No more "Too many objects!" crash in long sessions.
  • Big parties: fog of war works with any number of party members.
Not there yet
  • EEex's x64 assembly API isn't provided. IEX replaces the engine patches of Pathfinding Redux, StickLuaFunctions and SadoEE with native code; other mods that patch the engine directly lose those features.
  • Opcodes 404-408 and the Scale / Hotkey / Invisibility modules are missing.
  • BGEE / SoD alone, IWDEE, PSTEE and 2.6 aren't supported yet.
  • Linux has only been tested under WSL2. Reports from native Linux desktops are very welcome.
Credit and clean room. Huge thanks to Bubb and the EEex contributors: IEX exists because EEex defined the API that so many mods now use. IEX is written from scratch, with no EEex code; it follows how mods call the API and EEex's public documentation. It is a separate project, not affiliated with EEex.

How it's made. As with SadoEE, I build it with Claude: ideas, design and testing are mine, and most of the code, reverse engineering and debugging is done by Claude.

Download, docs and bug reports It's a pre-release: please try it on a copy of your game. Feedback, crash reports and "mod X doesn't work" reports are exactly what I need right now.

It might be too early to ask, but how does the program handle crashes? Does it just crash and that's it, or does it do something extra like creating crash dump files or so?
