Weapon specialisation problem

I can't work out if this is a bug, or if I'm missing something.

When I built my character, I chose a wizard slayer, and the highest I could get specialising in a single weapon was 2. So I went back and tried again with a plain fighter - and the same was true.

The fighter is definitely supposed to be able to go to 4, so what am I missing? Can you only go past 2 at a higher level? But the pre-made fighter has 3 in longswords!

Level 1 fighters can now only take two pips at level 1, this is to prevent people being grandmasters in a weapon at level 3.

The premade fighter should probably be amended...

In BG2 you could put 4 into a single skill because that is how it accounted for your increase in levels. In Tutu they kept this although in the original BG you could only put 2 max in each at level 1 (you could go past later). BGEE fixed this "problem" and made it the same as the original BG. The fact that the pre-made fighter has a 3 in longsword (if this is indeed true) is a bug.

Cheers! What level can you further specialise then?

That's an interesting page, thanks. But while it says when you get proficiency points, it doesn't seem to say when you're allowed to put more than 2 against one weapon. Unless it's simply that you can at any time after the start - therefore level 3 when you get your first additional point?

@bazzabear yes it does, the column "Proficiency Points" is what you are looking for.
It stats you can distribute 4 pionts on your first level an get an additianl point every Level which can be divided by three (3/6/9/12 etc.)

Yes Exactly so you can reach 5 points at level 9.
