Multiclass gnome, PnP

Can gnomes be fighter/illusinist/thief in pnp?
They can be fighters, illusionists and thieves as single class, why can't they multiclass as 3 of them together?

Edit: I just don't want to feel bad editing the game to allow the multiclass.

    It's not in the rules per se, but I don't see why a DM wouldn't allow it in a p&p game.
