Unable to start game - no response and occasional error

HI...I'm on Win7, 6950 ATI card running up to date drivers.

1) downloaded standalone launcher. Opened it....hourglass spins and then nothing happens. Tried again and got an APPCRASH problem. Followed the troubleshooting advice nothing...unistalled, rebooted and
2) downloaded beamdog client. reinstalled same result.
3) tried opening the game via the 00766 file same result
4) tried all compatibility varients with same result
