Setup HP ENYY 15 laptop
iCore 7 1.73 ghz
8 gig ram
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4380, July 2012 driverset
Windows 7 home premium service pack one

If someone will tell me how I will attach the zip of the dump file

This is incredibly frustrating.

I get to the option screen fine, with "Tutorial", "Black pits" etc, but once I hit play from the character generation screen, the program locks up.

You should have a .dmp file in your "crash" folder. The devs would very much like to see that, could you upload it?
(I have not actually seen this folder (no crashes yet), I would reckon it's either in your game folder or at
    C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition )

Don't forget to zip it before uploading here.

Don't you have an option to "Attach a file" to your posts?

The developers work on this right now. But another crash report won't hurt so they can see if it is the same problem.

Apparently your video card doesn't support compressed textures. Let's hope the developers can think of something to help you.

Ok, so this never worked, not even before today's patch.

My chipset is light years beyond hardware available when the original was published in 1998. I can play Dragon Age: origins on this machine just fine. What gives?

Unfortunately I am the wrong person to ask.
@CameronTofer is the guy who knows more.

DXTC and 3Dc+ texture compression supported

    per ATI's website

The original had no compressed tilesets? It wasn't fit in 1.8G either.
But you are right, dxtc should be good enough, if implemented correctly. Actually, dxt1 is the only part which is needed.

Actually, i found something like this on google: If you switch off 'Support DXT textures' as an option in ATI Traytools, you can recreate this error.

    Did you?

You are on to something, I think. Problem is, I can't get Catalyst onto the laptop, as ATI's autodetected driver gives me a BSOD, and HP's 2010 version evidently doesn't include Catalyst, which I would need to make the change. I also found some documentation on HP's website that implies (does not outright say) that the Envy 15 is a intel/AMD hybrid. I sure as hell can't find an intel chip in Device manager - Display. I am really freaking tired of this.

Update: The graphics on this particular laptop are NOT dual AMD/Intel. Still can't get Catalyst to run, though - it is installed but fails to start when I click on the exe.

Final update: Got it working. Uninstalled ATI's most recent drivers, installed HP's version of ATI's drivers (2010 - pretty old) uninstalled and reinstalled BG and everything works now. What a PITA. Happy it is working, though.

Glad to know you were able to solve this on your own.

It is good to know that not always a recent driver is the best driver.
Moving it to fixed, though we didn't do anything
