Toggle auto-pause during conversations in multiplayer

I might remember this totally wrong (I rarely played either BG1 or BG2 in multiplayer) but didn't at least BG2 work in such a matter that the game only paused in multiplayer during important conversations? I'm starting multiplayer with some friends now and it quickly becomes very annoying talking to NPC's when the entire game has to pause for even the smallest conversation from a NPC (Don't even get me started on Noober here....).

There should be a way to at least toggle so the game DOESN'T pause during the conversations, it really slows down multiplayer to the point that it almost becomes unplayable unless the entire party is VERY patient, and unfortunately my friends aren't really that patient and I really wanted to introduce them to Baldur's Gate now that it gets an enhanced version.
