There's a component of the mod One Pixel Production (which I know you are looking into) called "Extended Palette Entries" (link: http://www.shsforums.net/topic/41723-1ppv3-extended-palette-entries/). What it does is make additional color gradients available to the Infinity Engine, taking their number from 116 to 256.
Being limited to 116 colors was a limitation I'd always hated, and Extended Palette Entries is a component I've always loved since its release. For a 2012 re-release of Baldur's Gate I think those gradients should automatically be made available to players and normally used in game for both joinable and non-joinable NPCs.
Which brings me to the "(very)" part in the header. Why limit the entries to 256 gradients when everything out there nowadays is True Color (16,8 million gradients)? I think it's time for every part of Baldur's Gate to manifest itself in full True Color splendor!
