Mage and weapon proficiency

From the definition of mage, we know that they can just put one proficiency point in Dart, Quarterstaff, Dagger and Sling. However, at level 24 a mage receives a fifth proficiency point, and a sixth at level 30. What happens at those levels ? Will there be a problem and it will not be possible to increase level ?
I am planning a full run until ToB so I want to be sure that there won't be any problems when I get at the end ...

Not a problem - you just don't receive any more points once you've completed all available proficiencies.

Can't they also put points (or a point each) into weapon styles?

Mages are the lone class that cannot put pips into the weapon styles.

It takes away from their studies too much apparently. If it wasn't for steak-knives, dart boards (for when they need a break at the local pub) and walking sticks they'd be stuck with slings!

I think the reason for mages getting extra pips is dual classing. When you dual from fighter you will then get a chance to spend those.
