Why are my characters no longer following their AI Scripts?

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
This happens to me at some point eventually (usually it starts in chapter 2 or 3) one-minute scripts work just fine but the next thing I know they act as if they don't have one at all.

    Have you accidentally turned the AI off (icon above "select all" on bottom right of screen)?

    The icon looks like a lantern. Bottom right of the UI

    also note that pressing the "A" key on the keyboard will toggle the AI on and off, just in case you are playing it on a PC

    if that lantern is highlighted then that means the AI is on, if it is not highlighted that means the AI is off just for a future reference

    You know, I was playing earlier with AI on, and when I encountered enemies, my characters automatically attacked them . . . for a while. But then, of a sudden, they stopped attacking on their own, and I know I had AI on. Maybe there is more to this than an accidental toggle.
