a grand total of 90 and minmaxed as hard as you can.
    so overpowered.

from a RP point of view that 3 in wis sound all the way wrong, the bards have the highest lore in the game and a wis at the minimum possible level strikes with that, high lore should be the consequence of high int, but somehow also of high wis as wisdom and knowledge are somehow related.
but as wis in the game is only useful to clerics and mages that want to cast wish from a PG point of view is perfect :)

cha at 17 is fine, a bard is also an entertainer so high charisma is needed from a RP point.

if your goal is powergaming you could not really wish for more then that...

What should be the not minmaxed but useful bard stat allocation ?

decent str, there are plenty of items to improve it anyway in bg2, good dex and 16 con, as he does not get more hp from an higher one.
then some int, wis and char roughly equally distributed, as from a rp point are all 3 important.

but this is a rp view of the stats, there is really nothing wrong in rolling a very high score and minmaxing caring only to the maximum efficiency according to the game mechanics, as @Cvijeta did.

Bards can find the Claw of Kazgaroth very useful, so you might want to consider raising constitution to 18 (an alternative use for that is also to use the tome and Buckley's Buckler to activate regeneration). Bards can make use of friends to boost charisma, so you don't really need that as high as 17 if you're just interested in power gaming.

The powergaming part of the build is 18-18-16 for physical stats, it barely matters what you do with your mental stats.

I definitely need 18 int for spells.

Potions can take care of that since once the spells are scribed in your spellbook you can cast any of them that you're allowed to by level. The intelligence requirement for casting a spell described in the manual was never implemented.

18 int is also useful in battles against flyers, but yes the dex and con stats are the most useful PG wise.

str a little less as there is a belt that gives 19 str right out of chateau irenicus, is true that also the belt from trademeet is really useful with a 50% reduction of some spells damage, but anyway i don't see str as a priority, even in a fighter.
and every respectable bard can print money at will to buy it, only selling to a merchant the wands from the starting dungeon, stealing them back and repeating with the promenade fence you get much more then you need. even if a smart bard would use that money to buy RoV and some other valuable items then repeat the double selling and stealing so at the end of the day, the first day of freedom after the cage, he is literally flooded by items and money :).

one of the reasons why bards rule ;)

and i would choose a better grand total with a 18 str then a lesser grand total with a 18.00 rolling a fighter.

EDIT: anyway the lev2 arcane spell gives 18.50 str for a turn/level, that whit an efficient way of playing let clear almost every dungeon as the bard get some levels.

Bards only get spells up to level 6 in an unmodded game

Could be the OP is thinking of later editions of D&D where your casting stat affects DCs. That isn't true in BG/BG2, though WIS and CHA have so little value to a bard that you don't lose much by maxing INT.

yes, in bg-bg2 the only effect of int on spell casting is that the more int you have the less you risk to fail to learn scrolls, unless you have a very low int that if i am not wrong forbid you to use the wands.

but as long as he uses potions of genius, that stack, when he learn spells a mage with 10 int is as good as one with 19 int.

until they find a mind flyer... ;)
