Trump already tried to make it look like he's doing something by widening the travel ban. As of today 38 states have confirmed cases so it didn't work. Rather than go for the appearance of doing something a quarter of US workers do not have paid sick leave. Congress should pass something to fix that problem so sick people aren't forced to go to work to their low paid jobs where they probably interact with the public.

It is unlikely that the cruise ship industry survives corona. There have been far too many stories of disease outbreaks on ships in recent years, not to mention things like septic system failures.

Congress could rush through some sort of mandatory paid sick leave measure today, if they sit down, write the text, and don't get bogged down in layering amendments to it...if they *wanted* to.

Well Michigan is on the list now. Two confirmed cases. One in Oakland County and one in Wayne County (where Detroit is and also where I live) and one suspected case at Michigan State University. My old alma mater, Michigan Tech, is going to on-line classes only along with U of M, Michigan State and Central Michigan. Oh well, it was nice being on the '0' list for a while anyway...

At least they aren't shipping cases *to* your State like they are here. The Mayor of San Antonio is...upset.

I am pretty sure that once this all dies down, if it all dies down, then it will be back to business as usual on cruise ships. Maybe a slight hit but not much. We the people have the memory of gnats.

Huh? What? I didn't catch what you were saying--I was watching The Voice.

The State of Arkansas finally had a confirmed case this afternoon and the last I checked we still have toilet paper on the shelves at Walmart. Most likely all the bread and milk will be gone just like winter storm warning.

Panic-buying perishables like bread and bovine milk ahead of a potential disaster which could interrupt electric service for days is a *terrible* idea.

    To lighten things up...

The local branch of the Anti-social support group decided to cancel it's meetings until further notice because of the Corona virus. Of course nobody ever showed up for a meeting anyway so it was just precautionary. ;)

Look, folks. Italy is not shutting down the entire country for shits and giggles. Nor is Denmark.

Not to mention the inevitable bailout. You know, the same type of bailout that was such a Communist thing to do when Obama did it for GM?

Well, my daughter's school district just sent out a well thought-out and detailed plan since Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency in Michigan. They're going to be training the kids to use elbow/foot bumps instead of hand-shaking, tell them to wash hands frequently for at least 20 seconds, and stay home if they're feeling ill. In addition they're going to thoroughly disinfect surfaces every night after school. (I wonder if the teachers are going to have to supply the bleach?) They aren't suspending sports activities yet but will be responding to any action requested by the CDC. That didn't take long...

Edit: Parents were also instructed to take their children to a health-care professional if they exhibit flu-like symptoms, for evaluation.

I'm tired of people saying it's no worse than the flu. First, it's not true. Second, the flu is a very deadly disease. It's mostly because of a healthcare system that can try to get ahead of it with vaccines, education, and effective treatments, that fatalities number in only 12k to 60k per year in the U.S. alone. So "no worse than the flu" is still pretty bad.

Well the adults in the room tried but....

"Senate GOP Blocks Emergency Paid Sick Leave Bill From Moving Forward

The legislation put forth by Democrats would guarantee 14 days of paid leave for workers affected by the coronavirus outbreak."

    https://www.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_5e691016c5b68d61645ebff9?ncid=engmodushpmg00000004

It seems Dems want employer mandated sick leave while the Republican wants government paid sick leave (socialism). Oh how the turntables.

The Democrats torpedo their best chance to get everything they've ever wanted since I've been able to vote, and the Republicans want to spend my tax dollars to allow people to stay home from work.

Actually, he is currently in Queensland, Australia, filming an Elvis Presly biopic. Tom Hanks is playing Colonel Tom Parker I believe.

This statistically anomalous event is precipitating other statistically anomalous events. Like @jjstraka34 earlier, I am uncertain exactly where this goes now but I suspect some form of martial law or mass enforced quarantines and the prevention of any large gatherings of people for any purpose (large in this sense being "more than 100").

Travel ban from Europe is now happening, and it seems the Coronavirus Infection rate is doubling daily...
Unless the government starts doing something drastic, we are currently going the route of italy, which for the most part ignored it and pretended the flu was worse and now one of the most infected countries outside of China.

I'm just saying, this is how zombie apocalypse movies start xD

Well, my daughter's championship basketball game that was going to be played on Saturday got cancelled. My mom & dad were going to come up all the way from Tennessee (500 miles) to watch her. I know it's good to be cautious, but it still sucks...

My family had plans to visit NYC for Spring Break but we cancelled because we figured everything would be closed. Sure enough, Broadway shows are going dark until April 13th.

We were also planning to go to Disneyland this weekend but now they are closing the two Anaheim parks on 3/14 and the resort hotels on 3/16 until month-end. Disney has stated that cast members will be paid during the closure.

My sister hosted a foreign exchange student years ago and this person was going to come visit her in a couple weeks from Germany. She's pissed at Trump and hopefully can get her money back.

And for the final nail in the coffin for the comparing it to the flu argument...

We are now being led to believe that this virus can do permanent damage to the lungs...

Sars and Mers did this, but neither of them travelled anywhere close to how COVID19 travels.

Article by National Geographic with more details of what the virus can do.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/api.nationalgeographic.com/distribution/public/amp/science/2020/02/here-is-what-coronavirus-does-to-the-body

Again, most people (~80%) won't have any effect worse than a mild cold (some will have no symptoms at all from what I've heard), but the other 20% can have some pretty nasty symptoms according to this article. Most at risk of the worse outcomes are those over 60 and people of any age with heart or lung problems.

The public school system here has extended spring break an extra week and cancelled all activities until further notice. The extra week of break will be difficult on some families work schedules, though some may be told to stay home anyway.
