Shut up, you morons!

FredNFredN Member Posts: 243
.....Is there any game setting that disables the ridiculous verbal garbage that my companions periodically spew forth? We're heading off to whack some trolls in Nalia's Keep and she keeps carping about "How is what we're doing helping the unfortunate?" And if I hear Minsc babble one more time "Go for the eyes, Boo! Go for the eyes!", I just might lose it then and there. OK, I need him right now for front line beef, but later on, I am going to let some critter kill him, loot the corpse, and leave him to rot. I'll recruit a replacement, maybe Valygar.
.....And Anomen! He's an arrogant, egotistical, self-righteous prig, whose ego needs constant stroking. He's going the same route as Minsc. Viconia can serve as a replacement. She may be an evil Drow, but she's a heck of a lot more pleasant to deal with, and, unlike someone like Dorn, doesn't have personal side quests that require her to do obnoxious things. Also she has innate Drow magic resistance, always a plus.

In your "my documents" folder, you have a folder for BGEE and BGEE2
In there you will find baldur.lua - open it with notepad

SetPrivateProfileString('Game Options','Bored Timeout','3000') - Set as high as you like, these are seconds.

SetPrivateProfileString('Game Options','Selection Sounds Frequency','3') Set to 0 i guess to remove selection sounds.
    (can also be set in-game)

SetPrivateProfileString('Game Options','Attack Sounds','1') Set to 0 - if this removes the weapon sounds or combat cries, i don't know but might be worth a try.. i think it's the battle cries.

This should make your npc's shut up quite a bit.

If you want it even more quiet, you could just play Solo in multiplayer and make sure you have:

    SetPrivateProfileString('Multiplayer','Disable Banters','1')
(If this can be rewritten to a game option or program option, i don't know.

Interesting. You dislike one of the elements of this game that's a rather significant part of it's appeal over the decades (talky companions with unique characteristics/personalities).
It's entirely possible that this game is not the kind of game you'd enjoy.

.....You are missing my point. It's not that fact that my companions talk that annoys me; it's what they are saying. In the cases cited above, Nalia doesn't realize that the actions we are engaged in are in fact helping the unfortunate, by working on her quests. Anomen, as I said, has an obnoxious personality, and Minsc is a complete pyschotic who talks to a hamster and thinks it comes from outer space.
.....Jaherira talks, Viconia talks, Hexxat talks ... I have no objection to any of them being vocal; their comments are relaively subdued and usually reasonably sane. In fact, I'd be fine with Nalia also, if the designers had just altered that one inappropriate line of dialogue. Alas, she recites it constantly, long after her family Keep has been freed from the Trolls, even if we are on a mission that clearly does benefit the unfortunate ... like the Umar Hills quest.
.....Sure, characters having quirky personalities is a nice touch. However, I am also entitled to dislike those persoanlity traits. For example, if I knew someone who behaved like Anomen did, I wouldn't hang out with him. We've all had the experience of having a co-worker we dislike intensely. Well, the analogous situation applies here in the game. MC would prefer to adventure with someone other than Anomen and Minsc.

These are the voice set lines they repeat from time to time, not "real" dialogues or banters, I think. I also they they can get rather anoying if repeated too many times.
My first contact to BG1 was the sound of Minsk's battle cry while my husband played the game and it was ANNOYING! :D

I don't have a good solution for you for a running game. Maybe you could edit your savegame and remove the offending voice set lines from the NPCs' cre files.

Anomen starts as an arrogant prig. And then he gets actual character development; his main quest about becoming a knight changes him, whether you lead him to success or failure. You end up with one of two versions of him, both of which are less annoying than the initial version.

Also, there are plenty of opportunities for either you or your companions to call him out. You don't have to stroke his ego.

OK, you don't have to stroke his ego, but he's looking for you to do so. Also, I haven't gotten him through his quest yet, so I can't comment about his character after he succeeds. In prior run-throughs, I usually sidelined Anomen after we freed Nalia's Keep from the invaders. My cleric of choice was usually Viconia. That innate Drow magic resistance is sweet, and she can also provide interesting backgtound information during the rather extensive Underdark portion of the campaign. There is also the fact that I often recruit Hexxat as my thief of choice, and she and Anomen cannot be in the same party. I am curious to see how he changes ater his knighthood.

I think, the best character development Anomen gets in his romance.

Yes, now I'm thinking a friendship mod for Anomen would be nice. 😜

Be sure to keep the Lilarcor two-handed sword equipped at all times, for maximum party banter enjoyment.

"Be sure to keep the Lilarcor two-handed sword equipped at all times"
Oh, Lilarcor is an excellent weapon. It's a 3x 2-handed sword, which provides immunity to charm and confusion. It can be gained for 0 monetary cost, fairly early in the campaign. The ludicrous dialogue is just an additional perk. I am not sure how this relates to Anomen, however, as he cannot use this weapon.

I'd take it, because I won't play the romance again because Ajantis.
HiddenAdventures tries to close the Schrödinger's murder plot, at least.

The reason that's much more difficult to implement for Anomen than the other original romances is that while their dialogues are mostly neutral or ambiguous, his are positively stuffed to the brim with "fair lady" and other unmistakeable come-ons.

That's another thing about Anomen; he's a real horndog. Considering their different choices of deities you would think he wouldn't get along with Viconia. But if you put them in the same party, he remarks how he is surprised by how comely the Drow priestess is. Down boy! ::slaps Anomen's nose with a rolled up newspaper::
