Cannot install modmerge [mac]

Hello everyone,
So backstory is I need hip surgery, so I thought finding a game to play while I spend a month lying down after would be a good use of my time. I don't have a PC laptop, I have an old mac laptop though, so I decided to install baldur's gate on there. I want to try SCS because my last playthrough was on "insane" and still felt too easy to me. I finally stumbled onto modmerge, got through Mac's insane permission hoops, and then when I try to mod it in terminal, I get this error message:
fatal error: runtime: bsdthread_register error
I google that error and don't get a single hit. So, I am at a wall. I'm up to here with this mod, and I haven't even gotten to the point where I have to install each mod individually through the terminal. Any ideas on how I can mitigate this? Buying a new laptop is not an option. I can't sit at my PC for too long without it hurting.
