Trying to move to Steam

I can't figure out where to get the code I need to be able to download and update NWN EE from Steam. I haven't bothered to make a Steam account yet because it's no use at all to me if I can't get the game without having to pay for it all over again. So, what's the procedure? Or is there still some way for me to verify that I own a legal copy and download just the EXE files to update?

    Not as urgent now, since I managed to get it through GOG (already have an account there) but still would be nice to know the answer in case I need it in the future.

    As for the Steam version in particular, you'd need the Steam app to download the game. You can launch the game directly from the .exe file even with the Steam version.
