Any easy way to make money?

I'm Lv 6 and have about 9K gold, now, I havent bothered to spend much, but I just d/c'd Imoen to Mage and wanted to give her wands, until she had a decent armoury of her own spells, but when I went to get the magic missile wand recharged, it cost 8K gold, now, I dont really need the wand, I have a couple of others, but, I was wondering if I'm missing something, regarding making money.

Thanks for any advice :)

Yeah I'm probably at fault, I dont pick up weapons etc. unless they are blued out, probably should start lol, thanks Bhalldog :)

Yes thats probably another factor as I always just base myself in Nash as you port into the place beside the Inn that I use for storage, so I tend to do all my trade there, thanks Erg :)

Some early options to make money are selling winter wolf pelts to the shop keeper in Nashkel (it will be added to your journal as a diary entry) - he buys them one by one, the price won't go down. The smith in Beregost will do the same with ankheg shells. The buying prices for both are always the same, regardless how many items you bring.
Some items that aren't blued out (non-magical) are worth more than others, so early in the game, it can pay out to pick them up and sell them. Generally, that's non-leather armor and heavy weapons. You won't get "rich" with them, but they can at least pay an early resurrection or some potions.

I almost never bother picking up or selling unenchanted gear, and I still always end up drowning in gold by the end of the game.

Where are you in the game? You can't help but be rich by the time you've explored Baldur's Gate City a bit.

Having a high reputation helps too.

@KidCarnival are those Ankheg shells the "heads"? I have killed tons of them in the pit, but the heads were crazy heavy, so I never bothered picking them up, except for the quest for 4 form a girl adjacent to the pit.

@Madhax, oh, i'm not far at all, as regards the story, I am heading to Cloakwood, but I've just been messing around unshading maps , basically just levelling up (currently Lv 6).

I'm not too bothered about the money per se, its just that I was taken aback when it was 8K to get a wand recharged, I thought I was doing something wrong as I only had 9K gold so far.

Thanks for the help guys :)

On a side note, I wouldn't really bother with the wand of magic missile. It can be useful right in the beginning, but after a little while, the 1d4 (+1? I forget) damage just isn't significant, in my opinion. Nevermind the cost of recharging it.

Ankheg shells are indeed the "heads". They're worth something like 500g a pop to the Beregost smith, and he can also make them into a nice suit of armor for you once. They're heavy as hell, so you'd need a strong character like Minsc or Dorn to carry them about.

Keep in mind that "recharging" wands is really buying them at full price, so it's going to be expensive if you want to keep doing it. So, as I'm sure you've figured out already, don't bother with weak stuff like magic missile wands.

If you're in Cloakwood, you've got plenty of riches ahead of you. The vast majority of them actually, if memory serves. I was thrown off a bit because level 6 is quite advanced for your chapter in the game, but no matter. You'll be rich soon enough, don't worry.

@Madhax, yes I'm a bit OP, I spent a long time in the pit resting and killing Ankhegs, so I could d/c Imoen quickly :)

@TJ_Hooker thanks for the heads up :)

If you want to farm ankhegs (i.e. saving up for a weapon in Beregost), it's best to have Dorn in the party. His 19 strength means he can carry a lot ankheg shells, more than the 18/xx strength characters.
Winter wolves are a bit trickier to farm, they don't spawn as reliable as ankhegs. The best chances to find some are on the maps around Nashkel Mines and travelling between them, but it's more likely you just get kobolds, hobgoblins or bandits. Bandit scalps can be sold to Vai in the Jovial Juggler and it's sort of a farming quest, but they don't pay much (50 gold). The only advantage is that they stack in the inventory (in piles of 10) and are a lot easier to collect and lighter to carry.
The next best thing to ankhegs are Wyverns, which you'll find in Cloakwood. You can "sell" the first wyvern head to the Beregost Temple (it's Coran's quest, but you can do it without having him in the party or even talking to him) for a good reward, and Feldpost Inn buys wyvern heads, too. They do lose value with each you sell, so best farm as many as you can transport on your strongest NPC and sell them at once.

Yep, 1d4 + 1. :/ I like to plink it at people casting spells. When it interrupts, that's always nice...but yeah, when I dual her, I give her a wand of paralyzation when available, a wand of fire, and a wand of whateverelse, or a scroll.

I give wands of magic missles to melee specialists, so they can use it to interupt casters.

The only time I have ever used he Wand of Magic Missiles is very early on in the game for a surprise encounter (veteran players will know which one). Because if it is fired quickly enough it will disrupt a certain spellcaster. But shortly thereafter in the game there will be better ways to disrupt enemy's spells.

I thought I knew a good way to make money in BG once... but it turns out it was a pyramid scheme.

Grab weapons and armour and a competent Thief.
Head into Durlag's Tower and don't die.
Come out the other end farting gemstones and coughing up gold.

hah. i read the title and my 1st reaction was this was some business proposition outside of bg. durlags tower, yea, that was in the tales, no? lots of good tips i see. the wands are light and nice, yes. heavy plated armors are well, heavy, but indeed bring in a nice price. could always ask the courtesans for advice. they seem to do well :)

"Find someone rich, and kill them. Find someone richer, and kill them, too! Hack and slash your way to fortune! Woo-hoo"

This works surprisingly well. Wander the countryside fighting random bandits, other groups of adventurers, animals or whatever. Take anything of value from their corpses, rinse and repeat.

For a fairly easy 5k there's a couple of encounters due west of Beregost. Once you obtain a certain holy symbol, the mayor of Beregost may give you a reward...

Yes I did Bas and Mul for the symbols and have been farming Ankhegs for XP and gold, i'm doing OK now, all I needed was 18K for a poison dagger, but I have that now :)

    Thanks for the replies :)
