Don't make any big purchases til you get maxed out Rep if you're a good guy.
Getting 20 Charisma helps too. So if you started at 18 you can hit 20 by getting Algernon's Cloak from Beregost.
There are several quests that pay out pretty good. Turning in the crazy cleric's symbol at the Temple nets 5,000gp! That's a huge chunk of change and a third of the price of the armor you want!
Winter Wolves pay out 500gp per wolf pelt turned in at the shop in Nashkel. If you get close doing quests and selling normal stuff you can grind out the rest with pelts by resting on the Nashkel Mine map. Not in the mine but you can rest on the top edge of the map where the mine entrance exists. The Belt of Antipode helps you tank them early in the game and Sleep spells knock out the packs of kobolds you also get.
Simply kill Ankhegs in the farm north of the Friendly Arm Inn! They give 975XP per kill and 500GP per shell if sold to Taerom in Beregost. Be careful about their weight of 100LBS though. As CaptRory pointed out, Reputation and Charisma will grant you discounts. Get to 20 in both to benefit from the best prices.
The best trick I have is this: Sell all your magical Items to the store in nashkel then have your theif drink a potion of master thievery and steal them back. Free gold!
There's only one merchant that'll actually buy stolen goods though, so its not a long term money supply til you hit Baldur's Gate. And by then you'll have a ton of money. Especially if you farm Wyverns for their tails later on.

I wouldn't recommend fighting Ankhegs early in game. When I first encountered one I saw a big green glob hit and instant kill Imoen. Not use to RPGs that make enemies capable of killing me easily so accessible early in game, I assumed it was some sort of suicide unit. I later learned it was a big creature capable of easily murdering me in one hit at level 1.
That being said, if you can take them down they are worth quite a bit and you can sell multiple shells now too. The plate mail you get is some of the best armor in the game as well.
@Necomancer A big part of tackling them early is managing the risk involved. Sending in the guy with good armor, dex, and a big honkin' shield to kill one ankheg for a shell for the armor is a pretty good idea. Bring everyone up behind him to target it at range with magic and ranged weapons.
Grabbing the first hidden suit of ankheg armor and using it to get the shell to make a second is almost poetic. ^_~
Where's the hidden set capt? And necro... The fun thing about this game is u decide where you go more loosely than most RPGs. Some maps you can access should not be accessed until you're high enough though in my experience.
@CaptRory Yes, you can sell as much as you get! @Necromancer You just need a successful Sleep or some Commands to render this monstrous foe as inoffensive as a rat. So, whatever your level you can take Ankhegs down. And the more you kill the easier it gets to slay.
In Nashkel hidden in one of the farmers' fields. Its listen in every guide ever. And in BGEE it doesn't count as magic armor so you can wear a ring of protection with it.
Ankhegs can be very stupid. They will frequently keep using their ranged weapon at melee range. If you move their target right in front of their face when they do this they will get a -8 penalty to hitting you while you get a +4 bonus for hitting them. Just be careful as they have an equally nasty melee weapon and they do sometimes use it on you.

You can definitely notice if they are attacking with ranged or not. They are much easier to hit when you get a +4 bonus and they hurt you a lot more when at close range they are meleeing you.
I'm impatient and want armor of shadows now but it's 15k are there any gold tricks that work on ipad?
If your thief is unable to steal he/she isn't worthy of it. But my only advice is until your have around 4k I say pick up everything and sell it. Sell it.
That ring you'll definitely wanna steal back. XD Well, there is a second in the City of Baldur's Gate if you only have one mage that works. Still, its sooo useful for any low level mage.

@Abel Can you sell as many shells as you want now? Before I was limited to one.

No they don't stack.
