What about 3rd Edition rules in Icewind Dale 2

So I have both Icewind Dale and Icewind dale 2. I have played Icewind dale and loved it, but when it comes to Icewind Dale 2 I'm pretty clueless on how I should create my characters. I don't quite understand the feats and etc. Like which would be important for what class. Maybe this it the wrong section to post this, but I was curious if someone can explain this to me because my week and half long vacation is coming up and I would like to spend the vacation beating Icewind dale 2.

Moving this thread to Off-Topic, as it doesn't pertain to Baldur's Gate. Carry on!

i can't explain everything because my english is too bad for this

first of all it is 3rd edition and that means
condition = more life/level = saving throw for condition
dexterity = more armor (now higher is better) and throwing/missle weapons = reflex savig throw
wisdom = more cleric/druid spells and better power of cleric/druid spells = will saving throw
these are important statistics because if you have low wisdom they will for example mind control your characters easily with spells
    strength = same as BG
charisma = more dialogue option = primary stats of paladins bards and sorcerers = more spells and more power
intel = more skill points = primary stats for mages and specialist mages = more spells and power = more skill points

so now you can probably tell how you should proceed to level up characters

    for example
    fighter class
str dex conc int wis charisma
    18 16 18 3 18 3 good fighting stats and wisdom for better ST

    mage class
11 18 18 18 10 3 good armor class condition main stats (intel) not bad wisdom (10=no penalties)

when you level up every few levels you can add 1 point to stats so if you level up fighter add str and if you level up mage add intel

there are few class that can do various things like rouges paladins monks
rouges have few unique abilities gained at level 2 and beyond they can dodge on reflex save completly something like fireball (other character make ST for half damage)

paladins has very cool abilities that upgrades ST based on their charisma so they should have high charisma

monks gain bonus ac from wisdom so they should have high dexterity and wisdom

feets and skills are hard to explain in depth but there are pretty good desciptions in game

like subvocal casting and combat casting that improves casting in hard spots

the easiest to make are barbs fighter and sorceres clerics
hard to make characters are paladins monks rouges

i hope you have at least some knowledge now

i will just quote myself from another thread with my semi-powergaming-party
    zur312 said:

    shield dwarf barbarian with 18+/16/18/3/18/1
shield dwarf cleric of tempus 18+/16/18/3/18/1 fighting cleric
human druid 16/18/18/3/18+/3 spells + shapeshifting
    drow rogue(1)/conjurer 11/20/16/20+/8/5
    human sorc 9/18/18/3/10/18+

a little explanation about party and %=% of kills
    barb = tank/dps (26%) with 2hand greater swords
dwarf cleric = almost 2nd tank/buffer (24%) supposed to be 2hand great axe but for now cool mace
druid=powerfull as all hell with shapeshifting into giants and later on half dragons + aoe like sorc (25%)
    sorc=aoe fire damage (14%)
drow rouge/conjurer=thief+ a little chaos with spells (8%)

    for powergaming purpose
-druid is the best later on explanation
-i think those melee classes are not that good
-my cleric would be better as monk1/clericX human for wisdom armor bonuses and adding into wisdom not strenght probably for better effect on spells
-drow rouge/conjurer is from JUPP but i dunno without fireballs mages are weird
-i think now it is a little too easy when druid + sorc go into room and cast 2x sunfire for the win
-druid on mods in 1v1 > barb or cleric

    mods
    -tactics
    -improved druid spells and shapeshifting
    -some tweaks fixes and patches

I think I've understand most of that, but so it's okay to have a dump stat of 3? Are there no bad penalties for that?

ok for intel and charisma if your character doesn't depend on that
other stats should rather be higher

so fighter with 3int is ok but mage or thief will lack some skill points

actually there are things that can allow lower stats

for mage you dont really need 18 conc because mirror images tank very effectively

you don't need 18 wisdom because chaotic command from cleric defends vs mind control spells etc.

but it is easier to just get this 18 dex or wis

oh another thing about 3rd edition is

you can't multiclass as good as in BG
for example in iwd2 you can have 30 level cleric or 15/15 fighter/cleric so pure class is much stronger
in BG2 fighter/cleric is so much better than pure cleric

multiclassing in IWD2 should be really carefull but there are some cool things that you can do like
get 4 lvl fighter for weapons specialization and level cleric or something
get 2 lvl thief for this dodge skill
get 2 lvls of paladin for something
get 1 lvl monk for wis to ac bonus
get 1 lvl mage for spell scrolls
get 1 lvl ranger for dual wielding etc.

    general good races
for example dwarf has +2 conc so easily he is good as fighting melee but dwarfs get +2 ST making them even better as tanks

humans are good spellcaster because human race gives them +1 skill point so they can lower int to 3 and still get 2 skill points

deep gnomes with magic resistance are great monks

im really sorry for this chaotic explanation and you should really read jupp or upp if you wan't to know mechanics in depth

The main important thing for me to mention:
The DEX system works like in Neverwinter Nights: So 18 DEX gives +4 bonus, while 14 DEX gives +2 Bonus. If you wear heavy armor you wont be able to utilize your DEX bonuses. So it might be a good idea for a Paladin to have low dex (but high CON/STR/CHA) because he will most likely be wearing heavy armor.

    Just one correction:

It is NOT ESSENTIAL to min max. You can give a fighter a STR 18 dex 14 con 14 , and 10 on the other attributes and he'll be fine.
