Fallout New Vegas

I thought I'd share some thoughts on this game since I've been putting so much time into it. It's actually a great game in a lot of ways, but a really irritating game in others.

Here's the thing: if you're a completionist like me the game is a nightmare. A lot of quests are incredibly buggy, some quests break other quests if not done in the right order and some quests break easily if not done in exactly the right way. I'm trying to see how many companion quests I can get through, but you have to be careful not to solve certain quests without them. Basically I've been relying on the fallout wiki to help me through the game.

So don't get me wrong, it's still fun, but there must be a quest bug fix mod out there or something...

EDIT: Woops, I mean to ask, what do you guys who've checked out this game thing?

If you try completing everything with one character buddy, fallout:NV is a game that will irritate you to no end. I managed to satisfy my completionist cravings by making multiple characters and roleplaying them. My favourite being (and the most unique in the game in terms of joinable NPC's) was my cyborg cowboy. Don't worry about the bugs so much - there are usually roundabout ways of getting past most of them. Google helped a lot with that game.

Just try to play the game in the most fun, unique way you can - otherwise the bits you miss out on will eat at you and before you know it, you're spending hours on end walking a tight rope trying to get a 'liked' status for the legion, by hunting down NCR dog tags without actually angering the NCR. All to get a certain groovy accessory. Trust me, this is not the way to go my friend.

Source: 100's of hours playing the same character until I became incredibly bored and never bothered to finish the game with him.

I played it once and it was enjoyable. But I tried playing a second playthrough and I think in my first I had covered so many missions that I just had no reason to want to play a second (beyond the main quest line being different).

@EntropyXII - Really good advice. I've done pretty well with this character, but have to check the wiki a lot. There are a lot of bugs that it seems could be fixed pretty easily - I don't know if there's been any fan effort to do this.

@elminster - Yeah, I'm picking this game up after a long hiatus. I bought a bunch of the DLC's cheap and thought I try them out.

Love the game. A lot better than fallout 3. Ive got over a thousand hours played of it, every which way, with mods, vanilla, DLC, what have you.

@MERLANCE - Wow, that's pretty good. I'm approaching 250 hrs which seems like a lot.

Despite the bugs, it's a very good game. It also seems as though the bugs wouldn't be that hard to fix. The game is designed to be moddable after all.

The one really irritating bug is that companions lose all their weapons if you go into a Casino. I had to use "additem" to get over that one...

Wow, there are so many bugged quests in this game :(

I keep hitting ones that are hard to fix...

Had WAY to many gamebreaking bugs crop up every time i tried to play it...all right at the beginning. Finally got so frustrated I returned and haven't look back. This was at release though, so it might've been patched since then.

Its not super buggy, but most of the quest bugs are for quests where you screwed up and did something out of order, or killed someone you needed to finish and it didn't register the quest as failed.

It is kind of useful to know how to use the console commands for it. Its real easy to get stuck in the geometry for example, and "TCL" is a lot faster than loading a quicksave from ten minutes ago. Unless you want achievements I guess, in which case would be better to get unstuck, then save your game, shut it down, and reload.

Doesn't work on a console (typical Bethesda garbage, even if they were only the publisher).

The wiki has been great for figuring out the precise way you need to do something for the quest to work and it also gives helpful ways to try and fix them. I somehow managed to resolve a side quest in a way that bunges up the main quest line and the wiki doesn't have much advice. Arrgh!

I may just backtrack. I mean, at least I know what I need to do...

EDIT: actually there is another way that is more brutal and not what I wanted to do, but I believe it will allow me to move forward (this is the "Oh My Papa" quest, I was trying to avoid wiping out the Khan's).

Well, I'm a sucker, so I back tracked far enough to try and get the quests to work out the way I'd hope they would.

You play the game enough (like I have) then you naturally become aware of possible bugs. Like I said, the bugs really are a non-issue. There isn't many and there is usually a way to fix them.

One thing I advise however, save often and save in different slots. Save files on FO:NV end up increasing exponentially in size to the point crashes become so frequent you can no longer play. Clearing game cache and HD cache works to fix this. If you're playing on the PC, well I am sure there is some kind of downloadable fix.

Well, I'm stuck on the quest "Oh My Papa". I'm trying to get the Khan's to side with the NCR, but I can't seem to get to that dialog option no matter what I do (and assinating Papa Khan hasn't worked either).

This is a very buggy quest and effects the main plot line. I tried wiping out the Khan's last time and even that failed...

I'm almost ready for console commands, but I might try a few more things tomorrow.

That is the only buggy quest that I can think of and it has to be done just right. http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Oh_My_Papa

This game has a few bugs here and there but nothing too serious IMO. Back when it was first released it sucked. It crashed constantly with me. Now with all of the patching its decent.
  • FredSRichardsonFredSRichardson Member Posts: 465
Yeah, it only crashes once in a while for me. I've been studying the wiki and still can't seem to get that quest to work out right. I have a lot of save points (before discovering the Khan's for example). I'm wondering if reputation plays a roll. I took out motorhead early on.

This one is the only one really impossible, except for the ones which exclude each other. Use the console to restart it.

@ilhdr - Yeah, I finally got through. What couldn't figure out was how to get the NCR and Khan's to become allies. I suspect I have to go the assassination route for this. I was able to resolve the quests and continue on with the NCR but as far as the NCR is concerned the Khan's have been eliminated.

Fallout new bugs was not that irritating game for me.
Well maybe I was lucky after reading all those hardshipa you guys passed through.
What I liked was collecting unique stuffs like "mercy" (it provides 40mm of merciful quick death yeah).
    Man I am a hoarder.
  • FredSRichardsonFredSRichardson Member Posts: 465
Yeah, love the hoarding. Gobi is awesome and I don't need much else.

Well, I feel compelled to finish this game, but I'm not sure why.

"Old World Blues" was fun (and funny!).

I have no complaints about FO:NV, but then I haven't encountered any bugged quests. *shrug* I am simply lucky, I guess. If I could keep only one of the games in my collection, I would be extremely tempted to make it this one.
  • FredSRichardsonFredSRichardson Member Posts: 465
If I had one game to pick, I'd have a really hard time choosing among the Black Isle, Bioware and Obsidian games. I think I'd have to convince whomever that they are all really one game =P

FO3 blew my mind, but then so did Morrowind and Oblivion simply because I was new to the franchise.

FO:NV has tremendous potential. I keep thinking a minimal bug-fix mod would help a lot (one could troll the "bugs" sections of the fallout wiki for a task list). The fan mods I've seen so far are not really minimal...

Fallout 3 is great. I was one of those hardcore Fallout fans that thought anyone other than BIS/Interplay making a Fallout game would be pure blasphemy. I wasn't going to give them a chance. Then some of the E3 previews came out that started to erode my attitude towards the game and eventually when it was released I said what the hell, and bought it. I was pleasantly surprised and still play it.

@CoM_Solaufein - It's too bad, but I think my completionist FO:NV run-through is going to sap all energy I have for this game for a while. I'd love to play through FO3 again...
  • FredSRichardsonFredSRichardson Member Posts: 465
Well, I finally got through a fairly complete run (managed to do all NPC quests, did all the DLC's, I'm sure there are a number of side quests I missed). I guess I'm glad I did it, but then I'm also glad I'm done. It was fun though a bit tricky to side with the NCR

@FredSRichardson You truly are a completionist then. Wonder what is your savegame playtime? Over 100 hrs?
  • FredSRichardsonFredSRichardson Member Posts: 465
Yes, I suspect that's about right. Lord knows my total play time is quite high ;P
