Both of these pieces of information are news to us. That's a heck of a deal.
I do feel I should point out that if you want access to the open beta when we start Phase III, you'll definitely want to have purchased your copy of the game through Beamdog.com.
I don't believe anyone brought up Atari. But the two things happening at the same time (Beta phases and Steam sale) might confuse people, and I wouldn't want people to be disappointed.
If you'd really like to be part of our Phase 3 initiative with the beta, head to www.beamdog.com and get yourself a pair of boots, a helmet, weapon and a shield and come join in on the adventure.
At Beamdog, you do get a cake and can eat it too!
Is there some kind of sign-up on the website I don't know about?!
When we hit Phase III, we'll make sure everyone gets a copy who bought it through Beamdog. The only reason we couldn't feasibly do that for Phase II is that we need to keep track of the hardware as well.
And I just bought mine through Beamdog this morning too. But that's fine. As much as I like Steam, I like supporting this project a little more directly too.
But I may take advantage of the sale to pick up a second copy for my Wife.
XCOM:EU is incredibly worth it. Can't wait for the expansion. Steam also finally got Silent Storm Gold if you've never tried it. Another fun tactical rpg.
Thing is, BG2EE Steam version is ten dollars cheaper than Beamdog one for people of my region... So as much as I'd like to support Beamdog, i'm not living in rich country...
So then, we know beamdog didn't put up BG:EE onto steam originally, and Trent mentioned that Beamdog receive less money from each copy sold than valve do. Fortunately, the steam release of BG:EE came a couple of months after is regular release.
Is BG2:EE being up on steam to order now, for pre-release more worrying in terms of the financial damage it can do to beam dog? Presumably, the majority of a games sales come in the first few weeks after it is released.
I don't know, I'm just wandering what you guys think?
It just means more exposure for the product as far as I'm concerned. Lots of people out there who were Baldur's Gate fans, or who had heard of it, might not have bought it (or even thought about it) if it didn't come on Steam (the concept of caring about where you own what game is not a concept I've ever gotten frankly).
Also I noticed that the Steam version isn't available for Mac users.
Something that would be nice, if BG:EE is going to run on Linux, is running it on SteamOS with their new Steam controller (which should be better for mouse-keyboard games)
I have been using Steam happily for many years. Whenever possible I try to purchase games through Steam. BUT for BGEE/BG2EE, I did not; will not.
I don't like the way Atari have been treating Beamdog: we should support the developers and NOT the greedy publishers. I doubt Beamdog sees more than a few cents per that Steam sale.

I'm not sure what they make but it really becomes as question of volume as well. How much in the way of sales would they have made for BGEE between today and October 7th? (the sale dates) What kind of traffic does Beamdog's website get compared to steam? etc. I'm not defending Atari here only saying that there may be some benefit at this stage to have their game on Steam. Also I notice that a lot of the main PC gaming websites are now covering that BG2EE is now available for pre-order (as in they posted articles today rather than when pre-order became an option on Beamdog), so hopefully that draws in a lot of pre-orders regardless of where they buy BG2EE.

Edit: Looks like Dee got here first! Definitely make sure to grab BG:EE from Beamdog if you want access to the open beta.
This is getting off-topic, though.
