BG EE 1.2 portraits are not resizing?

I made a 210x300 BMP image into my custom portraits folder - the file shows up in when trying to select custom portraits, but it doesn't display. All I get is a black screen.

Smaller 110x170 portraits seem to work.

This is the OS X app store version of BG EE...

My understanding is that in 1.2.0, the game should auto resize anything under 1024x1024?
