Rangers can only be dual-classed to cleric. For any other combination, you'd need to either modify the game .2da's with an text editor, or use EE Keeper.
My Archer is a human Ranger, but I can't Dual-Class at all. These are my stats; Str 17, Dex 18, Con 16, Int 10, Wis 14, Cha 12. Has it to do with the stats?
The only class your Archer can dual-class into is Cleric, and for that, you would need Wis 17. And as for dual-classing an Archer into Cleric, it wouldn't make much sense (in my opinion) because you would only be able to use the weapons allowed for clerics, i.e. slings and blunt weapons.
Are you playing BGEE or BG2EE? If its BGEE then its possible that eventually you will be able to dual class (because you can boost your wisdom to 17). Though in my opinion you are better off staying as an archer.
Actually an Archer 13/Cleric with grand mastery in slings is a pretty decent build, especially considering you can use Holy Power to get a Fighter's THAC0 and Draw Upon Holy Might to pump up your strength score into the 20's. I'm not sure what game you're playing, but if you're in BG1 you might still be able to do it using three tomes of wisdom.
In vanilla BG2 Archers and Stalker couldn't dual-class at all.
This isn't technically true. I believe they actually could before ToB. When ToB came out it changed it so that they couldn't, for some odd reason (though Archer does not synergise well with Cleric at all).

If only Archer could get Sling Grandmastery, that is. Only bows, and x-bows are entitled to GM. Tried it with EEKeeper, it was VERY strong (not even considering the all-divine spellcasting).
Archers should totally be allowed to Dual-Class to a Cleric; that way, when they get their levels back and realize they can't GM in slings, they can go "well gee, that was a massive mistake, wasn't it?"
It's like people who would dual class a Kensai to a Cleric... Why. Would. You. *EVER*. DO THAT!?

Kensai can get grand mastery in a blunt weapon, so, why not cleric?
Because you'd be a cleric with little to compensate for the lack of armor (though Armor of Faith and DoE +3 are nice, they aren't stone-skin + PfMW, iron skin, or use-any-item), with a neat hit/damage bonus, but nothing that cleric buffs can't replace. They can't use shields, so tanking isn't a good option for them, and their Kai ability is made completely trivial through the existence of Holy Power. A standard Fighter/Cleric or a Berserker/Cleric would be better suited for the role.
Kensai/Cleric is viable but totally pointless; it only serves to hurt your play-through rather than help it.

Oh, well then. Thanks for that, I was almost going to try that class.
Edit: Actually, though, after looking over the rules I think it's still quite viable even with only regular specialization. You will still get the +4 to hit and damage, and the called shots. I might try it anyway.
Archers shouldn't be able to dual class because they can't grandmastery slings? That makes no sense
Primary reason: Archer/cleric can't use bows and crossbows which is paradoxical.
Secondary reason: Having acces to grandmastery in slings would sort of overcome that paradox, but they can only have proficiency in those. A cleric can also have it. A ranger/cleric would be about just as good at using slings (he'd have specialization, but no archer missile weapon bonuses) while also being able to wear metal armor.
So an archer/cleric would be a thoroughly inferior and pointless kit, unless somebody levelled the archer to around level 18 to get +6 to damage with slings. that would be it's only perk (4 points more than a specialized ranger, woot), pretty pathetic.
So it was a forbidden dual class because it makes no sense and it's pathetic, makes perfect sense to me.
I still don't see why it should be forbidden, lol. Whether it's inferior to a ranger/cleric is irrelevant. If don't want to roll an archer/cleric don't - but don't forbid other people from doing that if they want to...

I've done a kensai/cleric and it was a great character... "Oh... you would not part an old man from his walking stick?"

if nothing else, i say forbid it if it's terribly bad flavor. an archer that can't use bows - it reeks so bad.

Thanks for your answers.

I think it was because of a mistake!

No, I don't mean someone who throws halflings, although that probably would be a cool class for an ogre or a giant.
