Minsc stuck at level 18

I have BGII:EE installed, so both SoA and ToB (I also used to own the same game from years ago). So, just started chapter 6 and Minsc cannot get past level 18. As he went past 3300000 XPs, I see the + sign on his picture and I can click level up in the character page but once in the level-up page, I cannot go further as the button is grayed-out. I can only hit escape and go back to the character page.

I also tried starting a ToB game using the SoA saved game but still can't level-up. Any suggestions?

I have the Mac version with the latest patch.

    This is a classic. Funny this turns up again and again. I also had to figure this out for myself, when it first happened, and it took a while. Strange.

    Maybe it needs more seizure-inducing flashing lights and glitter.

    Now seriously, a more eye-catching machination would be welcome, such as a glowing border or even a pointy arrow calling attention to it.
