  As far as I know the only way you can do it is using the click and drag button (it's the first button under the last character portrait on the right sidebar).
  
  Once you toogle that button, when you touch and drag the game will create a selection rectangle instead of moving the screen. You can use that to select only the characters you want.
  
  I don't know if there's a way to emulate shift+click selection on Android.
