Edwin's awesome powers are part of why my next Evil run will use the Ninde NPC mod instead. New blood, new romance, and not quite as many damn spells.

One way of looking at it from a roleplaying perspective is that Edwin is always considerably higher level than the group, but only rarely shows his true power. This is why, when other pure casters in the group are getting their first or second spell of a new level of power, Edwin is getting his fourth or fifth. As for game mechanics, the xp charts and spell progression would eventually reduce the gap, so the amulet actually keeps him consistently more powerful, as suits his character.

He's imo comparable to Raistlin in Dragonlance. He's very secretive, very powerful, and would be a very dangerous enemy, although fortunately he's lawful and not chaotic. The funny part is that you're actually working for him, as he sees it, and presumably, he wouldn't join the group if he didn't stand to benefit - like getting people to serve as henchmen or cannon fodder in his personal quest for arcane power, such as that contained in the Nether Scrolls (while it turns out to be a joke in this game, the Nether Scrolls are actually real lore-wise, and contain great power that can be unlocked by someone who can understand them).

From a roleplaying perspective, while he's a humorous character, he actually has a vast knowledge of things that 99% of people do not know and would be incapable of even understanding. Consider the fact that a mage with just 9 intelligence can learn and cast up to fourth level spells, according to the rules - 9 intelligence is all that's required to cast fireballs and lightning bolts, or to be able to fly. 10 intelligence to learn teleportation.
