Chapter 8:Intermezzo

Naturally, MC's arrival in Sara's Tush was met with the usual joyous celebration by the locals. I.E., the group was immediately attacked by soldiers in the employ of some loser who called himself Grommet the Khan. He needed better recruitment techniques; these guys would have had trouble killing orcs. Being miffed, MC decided to try a direct frontal assault on GK's castle. This move turned out to be a bit overly optimistic; whoever he had manning the catapults inside was a lot more competent than his infantry grunts.

WHAM! A hit from a stone the size of a small hay wagon discouraged the group from further action of that nature. In fact, even after retreating, they got zapped again, and had to duck for cover in the nearby Inn. There they healed up, got into a bar fight with some more of GK's boys who were hassling the waitress (they really were a bunch of total losers) and got a bit of general information. MC was amused to bump into the same fellow he saw explode in Trademeet! It seems as how he was some sort of odd Bhaalspawn who had the ability to teleport away from an area when frightened. But a local gal named Melissa had apparently done some sort of therapy on him and now he was unable to be scared, and hence could not teleport out of town.

He moaned and groaned about this every time we spoke to him; finally Neera got fed up with hearing it and hit him with a scroll of Horror. Problem solved. But this gave MC some clue what to do next; find this chick Melissa and see what her story was.

Cutting to the chase, the party eventually found Melissa and got an odd tale about how she wanted to make Sara's Tush into a haven for Bhaalspawn, and had gathered a fair number of them and led them here. In fact, Grommet the Khan was one of her recruits. He had been supposed to take charge of the city's defenses against the encroaching army of the vile Yog-Sothoth, who was yet ANOTHER Bhaalspawn .... dammit Dad, stop taking those celestial aphrodesiacs!

Dad had apparently sired an entire freaking regiment of potential heirs. Instead of helping out, however, GK took over the town citadel and barricaded himself inside, along with some of the stronger Bhaalspawn recruits, while the rest of the Bhaalspawn wandered around the city aimlessly. You couldn't duck into a back alley to take a whiz without bumping into one of MC's half siblings. Bhaalspawn apparently vary quite a bit in temperment, and GK seemed less than stable mentally.

Now, MC could have told her that her plan was probably a bad idea from the start, since the more powerful and less benign Bhaalspawn were sure to cause problems. Her intentions were good, but MC knew full well where the road that was paved with those led. He should; after all, the group had just come from there. Repressing the impulse to try and thump some sense into Melissa, MC decided to scout the lay of the land, in order to try and construct a better plan of action than simply wandering the streets at random like those other clowns.

During the course of exploring the city, MC and his stalwart crew had a number of minor encounters and some successes.

    1) They solved a problem for a mage named Lazy Librarian, and were able to buy some scrolls from him as a result.

    2) MC was able to quell a street riot by simply proclaiming "I'm Bhaalspawn, damn it!". Very gratifying it was, to watch the locals scurry away like cockroaches. Just what MC needed, a further inflation of his ego.

    3) Various rumors indicated there were undead in out of the way places in the city. In fact, one rumor had the sewers inhabited by vampire prostitutes. Vampire Hookers? That sounded like the title for one of those lurid and tawdry plays that catered to the lowest tastes of the public. MC loved those! He immediately wanted to explore the sewers to see if the rumors were true; he'd had a thing for vampire gals ever since a romance with Hexxat. But the scowls of Anomen and Keldorn dampened his enthusiasm somewhat. Party poopers!

    4) Melissa and others were unhappy with the way GK was behaving, and would be more than glad to see him displaced from his position. But clearly, approaching the citadel would have to be done in a roundabout fashion. Possible routes included the sewers, and perhaps the basement of the old prison building. One of the patrons of the Inn seemed to indicate he had yet a third plan, but MC scared him away before he could elucidate. MC was not the most tactful of people, alas.

    5) While exploring the town, the party stumbled into a barracks full of some more of Khan's pathetic soldiery. You'd think they'd learn not to attack Bhaalspawn? Nah! Ransacking the place after the resulting massacre revealed a key to the sewers. Yay! Vampire hookers, here we come! It took all the party tackling MC and sitting on him to quiet things down.

You should try a Death Spell in the barracks. It's hilarious.

There's another sidequest in a less obvious building (tucked into one of the walls, I believe) that might be worth checking out. I mention this mainly because there are like four sidequests in TOB, and missing one of them would be a shame.
