Off-hand backstab a mistake?

Hello,
Currently playing a F/M/T for the first time. I've been using a Katana +1 (also, just picked up CF) in my main hand and the Flail of Ages in my off hand for a while. I've noticed that occasionally when I move in for a backstab, for some reason my character attempts to use the Flail for the backstab? Of course I receive some message about how "this weapon cannot backstab" even if it hits. I guess my question is why is the off-hand making the backstab? I thought the backstab was always based on your main-hand weapon or am I incorrect?

Thanks in advance!

Backstabs are made with whichever weapon is supposed to attack next. If you've made your main hand attacks for the round already, then your off hand will come next. To make sure you backstab with the main hand weapon, wait an extra second or two if you've attacked within the past 6 seconds.
