Axe ++++ VS Axe +++ Single Weapon +

I'm wondering what I should do with Kagain's last proficiency point. He got the STR belt and the Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise, so he's not only my main tank but also one of my main damage dealers. High mastery is rather lame, so my doubt is whether the increase in crit chance from Single Weapon justifies the loss of AC from shields.

High Mastery: +1 damage, -1 to Speed Factor, 5% crit chance, up to -3 AC with a Shield
Single Weapon Style: -1 to AC, 10% crit chance

    If he's your tank, take High Mastery in Axes. In BG1 AC matters, so that additional AC from shields will help A LOT.

    Don't forget shields can be enchanted so there's another -4 or so depending where you are in the game.

    I'd go High Mastery and give him a nice shield.

    Lose out on 5% crit chance and get so much more in return.
