Elf Archer Death Squad - What Class to fill last slot?

Since the weather is starting to look winterlike around here, I'm trying to figure out my new IWD team. So impressed by the archer in BG1 & 2, and the fact that I beat the original IWD2 with an all shorty (5 halflings and a dwarf, heavy on the ranged...finished the game at full HP on everyone!) I've decided to create an elf archer death squad, a super strong ranged party. So far I'm thinking:

Elf Archer
Elf F/T
1/2 Elf C/R
Elf Sorcerer (or maybe DD for flavor)
Elf F/M

...which I'm quite pleased with, however, I'm not sure who to fill my last slot with, as I wanna stick with the elf/half elf theme. I could use a bard, and might, however, I'd kinda like to fill the last slot with something stronger, just to see how fast we can mow down our enemies before they reach us. Also I wonder about whoever to give short or long bow profs too, obviously the C/R will be using a sling, and the sorcerer sling and/or darts.

Any ideas on filling the last slot or whether to give short bow or long bow profs and to who? Would a straight fighter be boring? Wizard slayer? Assassin or BH? A second archer? Hmmmm....

Remember that Bards are much stronger in IWD than in the BG series. Their songs are way better, and they can cast up to level 8.

Also, unlimited/returning ranged options are much rarer, which makes Archers a bit more annoying.

Seconding half-elf Bard. If your party will get a lot of attacks -- and yours will -- the Bard songs like Tymora pay off very heavily. Alternately, a Skald would also be quite nice.

Hmm, among other things, a bard could be the one crossbow user, to utilize the crossbow goodies. I was actually counting on the possibility of running out of arrows as something to be excited about, a little added suspense. "Should we turn around and head back to Kuldahar? We're low on arrows and knee deep in the undead ;) " If an elf could be an undead hunter I'd be sold on that (had a halfling paladin in IWD2).

The lack of unlimited arrows is really annoying and you will run out of magical arrows very fast. One character needs to use throwing axes as you get a returning one about halfway through the game.

I'd go with a half-elf skald. The to-hit and damage bonus will be of great help to everyone else.

Hope you don't intend on resurrecting anyone in the field...

Oh crap! I forgot about the resurrection only for elves! Too bad Beamdog didn't fix this (assuming it is still in place) - sigh guess I will cancel the elf heavy group I just created :disappointed: and head back to the drawing board!

(Not such a bad thing I like creating parties almost as much as playing them LOL)

Nope. We intend on slaughtering our enemies before they get to us ;)

This thread has made me want the 6th character to be a shadowdancer, actually. I just played one through BG1, with the intention of dualing her to mage 1st thing in BG2, and found the class extremely fun. Works great for baiting enemies, getting them to follow and then vanishing, which sounds quite deadly in combo with an elf firing squad.

There's nothing to fix, that's actually part of the 2nd edition rules.

Perhaps so but that doesn't mean I have to LIKE it nor that it's necessarily a "good rule" since for many folks (like myself) it just means they don't play elves in IWD rather than take a chance on the party ending up in the poorhouse due to some unlucky crits and the outlandish prices for resurrecting vs Raise dead (or at least they used to be - haven't needed a temple yet in EE so I don't know if the prices have been mellowed from the original.)

After all it's not like it would be the first time that any of the 2nd ed rules have been "adjusted" In IWD or BG for one reason or another
