Game won't start up... 783?error=-1073741515&lang=en

After trying to start up BG2:EE, I received a windows firewall request to allow the game through... which was new/unusual... but chose to allow it through the firewall. then I get a new pop-up stating "There was a problem with Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition." and a 'find out more' option and a 'close' option. both close out the game, and find out more sends me here: http://www.beamdog.com/support/783?error=-1073741515&lang=en which is a dead end.
As a test, the exact same thing happened with BG:EE. I've tried with the firewall disabled and I've tried playing offline. both have the same error.
I'd like to get back to playing... I saved just before the very last encounter in all of ToB. My apologies if this has come up and been answered elsewhere. I could not find anything. Thank you in advance for your help.
