Multiclass Weapon Proficiency Advancement

I thought that multiclass characters gain new weapon proficiency points for each of their classes, e.g. a Fighter/Thief would gain a new point at Fighter 3, Thief 4, Fighter 6, Thief 8 etc. However it seems that (in IWDEE at least) characters only get new proficiency points for their Fighter class (no point received at Thief level 4). Is this consistent with AD&D rules?

It is. Basically, multiclass characters choose the fastest progression for each basic character attribute (THAC0, proficiencies, saves vs. spell, etc.) and use that. The other class's slower progression is not added, it's simply replaced. The only exceptions are experience thresholds and hit points.
