Ranged weapons and no enemy getting close is my personal strategy as much as possible.

So I'd recommend Web and Grease highly.

Fireball, you can get a wand, sell it and buy it back with 50 charges.
Monster summoning the same, wand, sell and rebuy with a hundred charges from Thalyntyre (that pretty much takes you through BG and SOD, but you only get fifty charges from Sorcerers Sundries).
    Sleep, wand, do the same.
    Paralysis, wand

So no need to have any of those spells after the gold starts to roll in.

Level 5, cloudkill, and then some more cloudkill after the web and grease. I love cloudkill.....

Since you are new to the game I suspect you don't already know that all attacks on targets affected by sleep/web/hold/stun are automatic hits.

So I recommend that you strongly consider loading up on Sleep and Web.

I especially recommend Web not only for its crowd control ability (with an inherent -2 save penalty to boot), but also for its combinations:

    Web + Archery
    Web + Free Action
    Web + Spider Spawn
    Web + Cloudkill
You'll very soon find a sword that gives you Free Action while equipped, there are also two Rings of Free Action in the game, one of which can be acquired by pickpocketing the right person (with the help of a couple of potions).

    And more...

Just make sure you don't use it when innocent bystanders could be affected.

Indeed, an important point. Party-unfriendly AoE spells are usually (always?) also bystander-unfriendly, and therefore a Bad Idea in public streets.

Chant is a great spell! When you use it right, you'll give yourself a great edge in a battle! Most people don't use it correctly, and they cast the spell BEFORE battle. This is not the way to use it because the effect cloaks enemies and your allies with effects.

Could you write that last sentence one more time? I don't get it.

    An oldie but goodie:

    Xyx's BG2 Spells Reference:

    http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG2/SpellsReference/Main.htm

    *Starts reading*

    "Grease
Could be used to slow down enemies while you shoot arrows and spells at them but is not worth spending a slot on."

WHAAAAT Grease is so worth one spell slot.

    Decent guide overall, nonetheless.
