Companion bug

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
Just started but having bugs with companions.

Picked up Nalia first but cannot control her. Trying to move gear to her causes the game to stutter for a second but cannot hand gear over. Also cannot use any of her abilities or level her up. At first when going through the keep I thought she perhaps was not yet a true follower but bug persists after as well.

Then recruited Anomen as well with same bug. Cannot move either follower in the party order, command them, talk to the, equip them or control them in any way.
