Multiplayer still not working

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or what, but when I go to play the multiplayer with my friend (I'm running Windows 7, him XP) it still crashes. When I tried getting him to host his game crashed. Anyone else having this error or is it just us??

    this is a widely accounted-for error that you can bypass with a 3rd party program, but only for 2 players. check out the mulitplayer section.
