A bard is similar to a turd on a stick.

    Well...you asked for it.

    The wonderful thing about bards,
    is bards are wonderful things!
Their spells are showy and flashy,
their swords and arrows - they sting!

    They are stabby, shooty, spelly-casty
    fun, fun, fun, fun, fun!
But the most wonderful thing about bards is
    only humans can be one!
    Bards are charming fellows
    Bards can be awfully sweet.
    Ev'ryone el-es is jealous
    That's why I repeat...and repeat

    The wonderful thing about bards
    is bards are marvelous chaps!
They are loaded with lore and with magic
they can easily pick your pockets!
    They are talky, singy, buffy-boosty
    They are stabby, shooty, spelly-casty
    fun, fun, fun, fun, fun!
But the most wonderful thing about bards is
    only humans can be one!

    Only humans can be one!

@wondervice i wanted to love this, but they insist on liking it only. Although technically half-elves can be as well.

Its kinda sad, as I was reading this I suddenly realized that as a former musician growing up, with some military training before getting a degree in history and always tyring to crack jokes. Bard is likely my actual class irl if I had to pick one.

Bizarre. While I was never musically talented, I used to draw as a child, I'm a veteran, have a degree in history, and am always trying to crack jokes. Maybe I'm a non-musical Bard?

I realize that this has nothing to do with Baldur's Gate, but Pathfinder (my favorite PnP RPG, basically a revamped 3.5 edition) has an archetype (kit) of the Bard called the Archaeologist. They give up performance in exchange for more Rogue-like abilities: better at finding traps, a luck bonus to themselves (basically self-bard song in terms of mechanics, but you don't have to constantly perform to do it, and it isn't singing), and they keep the magic and fighting 'swashbuckler' aspects. Basically, it is Indiana Jones: the class. However, I LOVE it for those who do not like the bardsong.
