Stuck in Durlag's Tower

As the name states, I'm stuck in level 2 of the tower. The stairs to level three don't go anywhere even after I finish the hard fight in that room. (Trying not to put in any spoilers) There's also a door in the room which is locked to me.

Are the stairs a bug? Or am I missing something?

Thanks for the help,
Corgano

The four wardens are really tough! One of the worst battles in there IMO. I can't remember what level I've been to tackle them, but definitely level 6+. It can be done earlier, but then you'll have to really think your strategies through. Try to use backstab, maybe the fireball trap at the south end (have a character protected against fire in some way while using boots of speed). There are many ways to do it. Also remember to have your cleric and mage buff the party.

If you're still having trouble, I recommend Coran with dispelling arrows to remove spell effects.

its not the spell effects that bother, its killing cloud that one of them casting

Casting zone of sweet air (cleric or druid 3) will dispel the cloudkill spell.

Have most of your party out of view, then have your Boots o' Speed'd "chatter" character peg it. Follow up by dropping a cloud of your own (presumably using Neera if you're underlevelled) where your "chatter" was standing to deal a nice burst of damage yourself whilst forcing them to walk through two clouds to reach you, whilst you experience no side effects.

I suggest splitting them so you don't have to fight them all at once. I soloed them using a fighter/thief by spawning the encounter and them using a sand thief ring to go invisible. Then I ran into a nearby hallway and pulled a a couple of them away, then ran around a corner and hid. Breaking tough encounters into more manageable chunks is always a wise strategy.

@The_Cheeseman: Sounds like you use my playbook. I usually do most of Durlag's with my fighter/thief and my party just follows in his wake carrying the loot and buffs for him.

The fake stairs are nice for extreme grinding and looting(rare lvl 3 scrolls and more) at high levels.
    Now then: Chess anyone?

I'm stuck on level 3. I fought the bosses straight from left to right :( Does anyone know how to reset level 3? unless there's another way to get to the chess battle
