Reputation loss

I play a neatral thief and have Dorn in my party.
Since you get + in reputation around every corner in BGI I have tried to lover my reputation by stealing.

It is not going well. I'm not getting any loss in reputation - even if they catch me with my hands in the cookie jar.

Are there special stores and people I have to rob to get a lover reputation?

I thought I remembered getting a -1 or -2 to reputation when guards come to arrest me for stealing and you tell them to screw off. I think only with the flaming fist though. Also, I could be wrong altogether.

They guards want to kill me to. No reputation loss as far as I can see.

I have tried to steal from shopowners, commoners and NPC:s. Nothing seems to work.

I know that they still try and kill you, but I thought that picking a certain conversation option when they first confront you would give you a small reputation hit, at least with one of the types of guards. Yeah, I could easily just be remembering wrong though.

I'm having the same problem and it's really pissing me off. I want to keep my reputation comfortably high without going past 18, but I either get it too high or it plummets back to 9-10.

However, I should mention that when I reached 19, Dorn only went through his "are you sure you want me to leave?" dialogue, as if I had kicked him out. I could tell him to stay, and he would. Not sure how permanent that would be, since I reloaded immediately because Kagain dropped. It's possible that, either by oversight or intentionally, Dorn sticks around even with high reputation.

Just kill some npc's. Playing on 17 reputation with an evil party is stupid anyway.

Best thing I found was to install a mod that made store prices not dependent on reputation at all, since I found that "feature" to be stupid. I then killed people here and there, and if you pick the last dialogue option when guards confront you for stealing, it's a -1 to rep.

A good balance is to try and do good for most of the main quests that give rep, and be a lieing/stealing/murdering assface the rest of the time. My rep is 11 now I think and i've killed alot of people.

Also there are quite a bit of NPC's that don't lower your reputation when you kill them, even though you would think they should. Alot of the wilderness encounters you can purposefully make go horribly, kill the npc, and go on your marry way unpunished.

How is that stupid? I'm playing evil, but I'm not playing as some chaos-worshiping sociopath hell-bent on watching the world burn. I'm playing an amoral fighter-thief intent on improving his power and influence through any means necessary, and that often means making allies and crafting a positive image of myself. I do good things for bad reasons, in other words.

I just killed a halfing in Gullykin to lower myself to 9 from 19

The flaming fist officers chase you out of the house when you tell them off so prepare yourself for that

Best way to do it I think is to get to like 18 or 19 rep and then just kill an innocent discreetly and drop it down. You could always pick up Viconia for a classy -2 to the party rep :)

Ugh. Did the Phandalyn thing, lost 9 rep. Isn't there some way I could drop down to, like, 14-15?

OK - here is the deal for me.

I loose reputation if i try to steal something in the city of Baldurs Gate - but not out side of it.

What is the reputation loss from injuring an innocent?

I thought rep loss depended on how high your reputation was before incurring the penalty. If you are at like 19, you would lose 9 or 10, but if your rep was only 8, you might lose only 2. That's how it seemed on the 2 evil runs I played.

Get caught and then kill the guards that come to arrest you.

You actually just lose the reputation for getting caught, without killing the guards.

I think it's only certain guards though. You may also have to choose a certain dialogue option when they confront you to get the reputation loss.

Yea I know the Nashkel guards won't cause you to lose reputation even if you fail to bribe them. You also don't lose it if you fail to successfully steal from the Nashkel store.

    That's for killing, not stealing.

For stealing, you always lose 1 reputation point if you're confronted by a Flaming Fist Enforcer (not one of the Amnish soldiers in Nashkel) and your reputation is 9 or higher. It doesn't matter what you say since they don't take bribes.

iirc, there is also someone in Baldur's Gate who you can rob to lose 2 rep. That person is
Noblewoman Sarah in the Helm and Cloak

Yep, because she's an emissary from Amn. :D Too bad there's no followup to her threat.

You can also extort money from the noblewoman who pays you to kill Cyrdemac to get -1 rep. But it's sadly not repeatable.
