I am pretty sure that a ton of npc's are warning about the extremely heavily trapped Durlag tower and I seriously can't understand that it comes as a surprise that there are actual....TRAPS in Durlags tower. Don't go there if you don't have a thief with 100% find traps (potions help sometimes, but only for so long). The unremoavable fireball trap has killed me countless times, but I still think it belongs there. Especially when you ask your characters to walk a long distance and they make the shortcut over said trap.
I just did it on Core difficulty after returning from Candlekeep in Chapter 6, with Imoen at something like 75 for traps and I used potions of perception. Between Ike (the merchant) and the ones in the tower itself, there's plenty of them. Immy leveled during the tower so I didn't need to use the potions anymore.
The final battle for the tower was a little tougher than I remembered it, but I worked it out.
Durlag's Tower, Watcher's Keep, and now the Black Pits are all mini-games in themselves.
I've been playing on Insane without much of a challenge.
Then I went to Durlags tower and had my will broken
lol. Note to self Coran is not the right man for the de-trapping job
yeah, Durlag's Tower tends to teach one a lesson in humility on insane. and a lesson in how to chain together enough swear words to cover a nice 3 minute long shouting match with your monitor...
though in BGEE it seems somewhat less annoying - in BG1 and BGT Coran had a habit of joyously strolling over those traps... that instakill. anything.

Long live Durlag
long, challenging, rewarding, AND having a GREAT story behind (both sad and creepy).
