Patch 5's changes to the intro movie... Yay or Nay?

Arsene_LupinArsene_Lupin Member Posts: 181
I honestly had a devil of a time discerning any actual changes. The video is 100% the same, they just added some really sped-up dialog sandwiched in the middle (the "I can show you" bit), right?

They said it was based on community feedback. And while I'm really very, very appreciative of the incredible effort BD has put forth with these patches, the time spent re-working the intro seems... misplaced. The dialog very obviously doesn't fit into the scene. I think they should either have extended the intro with a new animated tile or two to fit the whole dialog of the scene properly, or left it as it was. What do you all think?

The "I can show you" part is so out of place, slapped there with a duct tape...
Yeah, they should add a scene, to make it work with the missing line.

They didn't even have to add anything, though. Even just slowing down the frame to linger on the guy's face would have worked better.

I appreciate it a lot that they listen to us. This, however, is a rather half-baked job. The Nietzsche quote goes way too fast and is formatted suboptimally, and the "I can show you part" is more of a joke than anything else.

Personally I do not even like the new intro movie, the original was 100 times better than the new one.

It seems that they desperately wanted to please bg community. It’s good to listen to feedback but at the end devs should take their own decision taking into consideration quality of the product… and if they really thought that these changes would improve quality of the intro movie then we are all doomed ;/

It’s not a big deal for me at the moment but it’s a bad sign for the future, when they will create more of their own content.

I'd be down with no intro movie at all. Just a cold opening straight to Candlekeep and let the story develop from there on out. The Nietzsche quote and Sarevok animation doesn't really add all the much to me, it's a little premature since what it alludes to happens late in the game and mostly in SoA/ToB.

They should've commissioned Uwe Boll to direct FMV versions of all the cinematics.

    Wouldn't that have been something?

Neither choice. For some reason, the intro is really choppy for me, but I don't know if it's because of the patch or because of my computer.

Just re-insert what I said elsewhere here, heh.

I found I had time to read the entire quote just fine and I wasn't even expecting it. That said, it probably could be around for another second or so.

As for the old line spoken by the scared guy being added back in... works for me. Yeah it's pretty obvious it's just mashed in there, but with the pacing of the scene they'd have to re-do the entire thing for it to fit perfectly. And really, I think it works; he sounds really panicky uttering it that fast.

I like it just fine. Yeah, the "I CAN SHOW" you seems a bit rushed.. but it doesn't bother me. Overall, I actually the like the style of the new cinematics.

I liked the new video as it was, I really did. The new added line sticks out like a sore thumb and screams 'edited sloppy job' I really gritted my teeth when I heard it. Then again, I will watch it a few times more maybe it won't come as bad. I hope.

Let's there be rock... 0_o ... Oh wait, i want to say change^^. The only thing missing in BGEE ? Boo as a playable character =p and maybe the Nietszche sentence. Wait, my corrector doesn't recognize Nietszche ? it's a bug?? Ha, just tszch in a single word, nothing strange =D

In hindsight, I'm a bit confused as to the poll options meaning and may have voted incorrectly. Is the current patch patch 5? I don't understand if it's asking me what I think of the current patch changes to the intro movie, or if I would like it to be changed in the upcoming patch.

The current patch is patch 5.

I think they should ignore silly things like intro movies and concentrate on getting this "Improved Multiplayer" they advertised the game as having actually up and running.

    Thanks. I voted correctly then.

That said, I'm of the honest opinion that the current Nietzsche quote is Overhaul's joke on us. The letters are so big and the text so off balance on the screen (it even gets cut off if you play in window mode), that it screams "Sloppy work" or "Gotcha!". I'm of the opinion it's the second.

    You wanted niet quote?
    You wanted niet quote!?
    There's your niet quote!

I highly doubt it's one or the other. I don't think it took a lot of resources to put the quote back in. Sorta of a "on the side" sort-of-a-deal. While I am REALLY looking forward to multi-player working better (And being able to play with people on different devices), I doubt the intro movie extended the period we have to wait for that any.

Better, yes. Animation is still horrible though.

I'm really disappointed in BG:EE overall. I think the fan mods take care of everything already. Sadly, wish I hadn't spent the money and just kept playing with a modded version of the OG.

i appreciate the effort but it sounded silly.

My biggest issue with the intro is the expression on the soldier's face... does that look like terror to you?

He looks like he just got really baked

Or we can hope thats the case, anyways..

This is overhaul's first project i dont think you should be so harsh. The game looks great, the new characters are fun, and the additional areas were nice as well. Not to mention there are kits now.

Every game has its problems but this is just the beginning of overhaul's career. I will continue to support them because i think they have the potential to make some really great stuff.. Hopefully even release BG3

A lot of people seem to have been expecting a full-blown remake.

The only legitimate reason I can see for that level of antipathy is if @misterid was one of the handful of people unable to play the game, period, due to technical issues.

Beamdog was mostly (though not completely) forthcoming about what they were and were not doing with BGEE, and their support of the game post-launch has been extremely commendable.

They should have just stuck with the original video and enhanced the graphics. I'm not a huge fan of the comic book styled videos; they seem more childish.

For me i would have preferred the original intro and then the new cutscenes. That's not to say there's anything wrong with the new one.Just that the original kind of set the tone for what was to follow-do i want to defeat and become this guy or do i just want to defeat this guy and become everyones flavour of the month.

To be honest I dont really mind. Putting the quote back in was fine, but adding that extra line of dialogue seems a bit forced. As others have said though, i really appreciate the fact that Beamdog is listening to us. But yeah, as far as cut scenes are concerned I would have perfectly happy if they added the quote in and then released the cut scenes that arent in the game at the moment. If they really want that line in there it would sound better with more time, lol.

It would be really interesting to see how someone would react to that specific line in the intro who had not seen it before. Wonder if they could tell it was "tacked on", so to speak.
  • Arsene_LupinArsene_Lupin Member Posts: 181
I kind of think so. The audio for the line is noticeably sped up, I don't think anyone would really even be able to tell what the words actually were without knowing the lines from the original intro beforehand.
