Where can I get ahold of a Melf's Minute Meteors scroll?

BaberahamLincolnBaberahamLincoln Member Posts: 10
Currently Dynaheir is laying waste with MMM, but I just dualed Imoen into Mage/Thief and I can't seem to find a MMM scroll for her to learn it from. Is there somewhere I can buy one?

Sorcerous Sundries sells a single copy of the scroll, which you probably bought. No other store has it, and it's not a random drop.

I'm sorry. :( MMM is a cool spell; I feel your pain.

I'm sorry too. Whats the point of adding all the BG2 spells if they don't AT THE VERY LEAST include them as random drops? Advantage sorcerer? Bah! Now that I know that Ima pretend that the chair letter drop counts as a free ticket for a BG2 scroll from my friend Console.

Since it is a second level spell they really should have it dropped in a few places at the very least, as well as available with more than one copy in a store or two.

@Tresset I've always said that was a benefit of a Sorceror in the party. You don't have to share the scrolls with them. Although generally there should be enough to go around even with three mages. A shame there's only one scroll, apparently, of the spell you like.

Its level three @eminster. Some mage you turned out to be... I'm telling Volo on you.

Since its level 3 I kind of don't feel it should be random loot. There is just not a precedent for level 3 spells to appear as random loot in BG1.

There are level 7 and 8 scrolls as random loot in BG2 and IIRC it's the only way to get a Spell Trigger scroll in SoA. I don't think there would be a problem if level 3-4 scrolls were random loot on Greater Doppelgangers or similarly challenging enemies for example.

If we can get Wraithform scrolls like this, why not MMM's?

You don't see greater dopplegangers until Durlag's tower or under Candlekeep, so while you are right it wouldn't be a problem if you could get them this way, if you had it available in stores (even if it were just in Baldur's Gate) people would likely have access to it beforehand. It looks like spell trigger is available by doing jaheira's quest (it is available off one of Baron Ployer's goons), getting it as random loot, or buying it in Saredush. I'll be getting to Ust Natha shortly so i will poke around there for it.

I know its possible to get a Wraithform scroll through a random encounter, but having played the vanilla game on and off for 10+ years I've yet to encounter it (outside of getting it in the fixed encounter in BGEE). It was an easter egg after all.

No precedent? I remember that there were at least 3 creature types that dropped lvl 3 scrolls in the original. Any ogre mage, any doppelganger, and skeleton warriors. So there is indeed precedent for it. I remember reloading before fighting khark (jar ogre at firewine) so I could get some good ones because he usually dropped a bunch of them. I would also fight skeletons at the seek no exit place in the tower in hopes of getting some too.

As for BG2, I have gotten high level scrolls from some very commonplace creatures. Amnish guards seem to be loaded with them sometimes. Try resting in the streets and pick pocketing the guard that comes to yell at you and you may get some.

I think in later versions of the original they removed the wraithform scroll as a random drop because they realized it was bugged anyway.

In all honesty I feel that every spell should possibly drop as part of random loot (even the high level ones since some people play with no XP cap or Wild Mages). Just make everything get steadily more unlikely to drop. The pinnacle of all magic should essentially rarely appear in a single playthrough while you are guarrenteed to find at least one copy of every 1st through 3rd level scrolls and most of the 4th and about half of the 5th.

When I uncapped my XP I noticed that sorcerers can indeed learn and cast spells higher than 6th so why shouldn't the scrolls appear?

Hmm guess you are right. Just killed Khark twice and on the second time got 3rd level scrolls.

Something very interesting just happened. I was dancing with the dead in D's tower (that one skeleton warrior trap) to train up my characters. Just as my inventory got full the last one I killed dropped a scroll of invisibility 10' radius! I am VERY sure this spell did not exist in the original. So what does that mean? Can the BG2 scrolls really be random drops? Or is it just that one? I'm not sure anymore. I would not however that the skelwa weren't dropping very many scrolls compared to other treasures. Hmm... when I eventually go to Firewine I'm going to try killing Khark a LOT. Maybe Then we will have an answer...
  • elminsterelminster Member, Developer Posts: 16,317
Yea I would have killed Khark in BGEE awhile ago in my current playthrough, so I have no idea what he gave me.
  • TressetTresset Member, Moderator Posts: 8,268
Hmm. Maybe I should try him now. I'll spawn an arrow of slaying to make it go faster (or a bunch of them and some extra Kharks). Lets see if I can get some of the new scrolls. I won't be keeping that progress though. Just want the answer...

Well that was boring. must have killed about 120 kahrks. Doesn't seem like any of the other BG2 scrolls appear as drops. I did not get a wraithform scroll either... are you guys sure those drop again? Anyway I am not 100% convinced (maybe about 80-90% convinced) that there are no BG2 scrolls as drops so I may do this again some day if I have time to kill, but not for a while. I did find a single bolt of polymorphing though. Those are pretty rare.

I took a look at the random loot tables in RNDEQUIP, RNDTREAS, RNDSCROL, RNDWEP and RNDMAGIC (all .2da) . The only new spell scroll on there was the invisibility 10 ft radius one (SCRL1J) and no wraithform (SCRL1R).
