Proficiency question

I have 4 pips in staffs and I'm a level 6 fighter.
I have 3/2 attacks per round listed in the character sheet.

Shouldn't I have 1(base) + 1/2 (2nd pip) + 1/2 (3rd pip) + 1/2(4th pip) = 5/2 ?

Or is the +1/2 attack for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th pips the same 1/2? So going past 2 pips doesn't increase attacks per round?

Sorry if this is obvious and I read it wrong.

    A quick and unrelated question about proficiency: If I multiclass (say from Thief to mage or Fighter to mage), do I keep any of my Thief or Fighter's weapon proficiencies while trying to catch up in levels as mage? Assume that the proficiency points are in weapons that the mage would be proficient in.

    Heh. It is a misleading description. The list of bonuses that it gives for each rank is what the total bonus is at that rank. It is not saying that those bonuses are added for achieving that rank.

    @Tresset

    Thanks, I haven't played BG2 in almost a decade so I'm surprised by how much I've forgotten.

    Edit: Sorry here is another question on this subject.

    If I take 2 pips in Longswords, and dual class and add one more to it, when I regain my first class will have 3 pips? Or would I have burned one?

    @tyl998 No I don't think so. It will give you a choice as to what to put a pip(s) in and that is what you get. However once both classes become active again all the lost pips from the first class will be restored.

    @moopy I think it will use the highest pipage achieved and it will not add them. So no it won't add and yes it will burn one.
