Alatos and entire Thieves Guild goes hostile after completing Oberon Estate quest

Ronin13Ronin13 Member Posts: 53
I've tried this a number of ways, with every possible dialog option but it always ends up the same way. When I deliver the 3 artifacts to Alatos, he thanks me & the Red Wizard 'sees to my reward'. I've played BG dozens of times over the years and so that wasn't a surprise. What was a surprise is that Alatos & every Thief in the guild goes hostile & tries to kill me as well. I've tried this on a number of different playthroughs and it always ends up the same. Baldur's Gate is minus an organized group of thieves. Now I get to loot Alatos' body & sell those artifacts for decent gold, but somehow I get the feeling this is not the way it's supposed to go. As I said, my vanilla edition of BG doesn't react this way completing the quest correctly. :-/

Nah, you might have forgotten a point, even vanilla was not a straight ride.

How did you solve the Oberon Estate then? Afaik you should avoid any dialog/whatsoever and just stealth your way to the room behind the 3 lads, grab the stuff and leave it.
And I think you have to do the other thief quests first, so that you are counted as full member of the guild - the 2 you receive from *erm* Narlen.

edit: did it that way and everything was fine for me.

I had a save in the original version just before accepting the quest and one in the EE at the same point. I did them both identically. The original version worked as expected, I completed the artifact quest, defeated the Red Wizard & Alatos apologized to me, all was well. I did it identically in the EE and all the thieves, including Alatos, became hostile.

@valky I always go into the Oberon estate invisibly, grab the items, go invisible again & zip out.

Hmm. Hmmmmm. I'm not arguing with you per se Shandyr. But I've been playing this game since it came out and I've *never* had the guild go hostile on me for completing only Alatos' quest. Now if that's what is supposed to happen but was broken in the original game and the EE fixed it, I guess that makes sense. I suppose to confirm I'll have to load one of my EE saves before I take the quest and complete Narlen's missions. :-/

If you do the other thieves guild quests before the other thief will kill the wizard for you and you will be part of the guild.

Okay, I've got a save just in front of the Oberon estate. I tried it again myself just now and this time I was *not* attacked by the guild. Confusing... :-/ Anyway, posting the save here.

@Necroblivion Yes, I've done it that way a number of times as well, never had any issues doing it that way in the original game either. But out of habit I normally just skip those because they're a bit on the tedious side for my taste.

@Shandyr Thanks for looking into it anyway. I've got a few other saves with different groups who will eventually reach that point as well. (The group that it did happen to is now long past that point.) I'll repost on this issue if it happens with the other parties.

I thought I was the only one this had happened for.
It´s seems to be a bug. If I re-loaded my quicksave just before talking to the guildmaster they would turn hostile again but then I re-loaded my latest autosave everything was as it should be with no one attacking me - except for the mage that is.

It's not BGEE related, i had the same "problem" in vanila BG with the whole thief guild attacking me, and i never understood why.

@Cener well, if it is actually a problem, then it's a problem that sneaked through into the EE from the original game. Thanks for letting everyone know.
