As a fan of Skull Trap and Horrid Wilting, I must say that I prefer the Elven Fighter/Mage. The lowered Wisdom of a Gnome is also a minor inconvenience for Wish in BG2. The G/I is without a doubt superior, but I don't think it's advantage is too major.
That said, I recommend that everyone tries a Shadowkeeper'd Fighter/Wild Mage. Most fun class I've played with in ages.
I use to not like having a shorty as CHARNAME until I played a Dwarf F/C and got a taste of those saving throws. Now I think I've only made a Dwarf, Hafling, or Gnome since then.
The shorties definitely make the best clerics, dwarf fighter/cleric, evil halfling cleric of Talos (got to love that halfling slong bonus on a cleric) or gnome thief/cleric all rock
For fighter/mages I prefer the more melee-oriented elf option, but prefer gnomes for thief/mages

The lowered Wisdom of a Gnome is no big deal even if wanting to cast Wish alot in BG2 - you only need 15 Wisdom max in BG1 as there are 3 Wisdom tomes, though when playing a fighter/mage I rarely have enough points left after putting 18s into Strength, Con and Dex and a reasonable amount into Int (at least 15) to even put that much into Wis and just use Potions of Insight (which last ages) to get my Wis to 18.
The lack of necromancy spells and the +1 THAC0 sword/bow bonuses are much more significant, just depends whether you prefer more spells but more limited selection) and better saves or the wider spell selection and combat abilities of an elf

I think if you have another mage or sorceror in the party not too big a concern losing necro, the extra spells from specialization surely pay their way so to speak...
