xp sharing.. but what if..

A thought sprang to mind, after dabbling with bg for the last ten years. - How does the xp pool share mechanic work?

More specific.. Lets say i solo up to lvl cap and then recruit Imoen back in. Would she still get 50% xp instead of 100%? Only other char is at cap after all.. And what if i had 5 chars at cap.. Would the 6th fresh recruit only get 1/6th? :S

You don't actually stop getting experience when you reach the cap (or at least thats the way vanilla worked) If I recall correctly the experience is still added it just doesn't show and you don't get to level up.

yes that is how it works, with the exception of quest xp, which gets awarded equally to everyone

also charname tends to get the benefit of any rounding errors, so will typically aquire xp a little faster

I have often adventured with characters of very different levels, and yeah, it divides XP by the number of characters no matter what "buts" you may want to attach to it.

I consider the computer quite nice to low level characters in that regard; in my own PNP game, if a 1st level character goes out with a 10th level party they only get 1/10th as much as the other characters (I figure they can't truly contribute equally to the party. I figure it as [total experience/total party levels = 1 share of XP] each character gets 1 share of experience per level)

To take things the other direction, what I would to in BG2 is collect all of the scrolls that I needed for my mage, disband the group and then scribe the scrolls. That gave my PC all of the XP from that (which is the way it should work anyway but isn't because of the game mechanic).

One play through, I played Fighter that dual classed to mage. Upon switching over to Wizard, he scribed his entire spell book and advanced something like 5 levels immediately because of it. The only thing that effected was it messed up my romance of Jaheira. So I switched over to Viconia.

When I imported into BG II and CHARNAME had over the cap of experience, it wasn't recognized so I had to Shadow Keeper it to its correct value.
Just a heads up, as much as it is a "did this happen to anybody else?".

I was wondering this myself, I have not even hit the Mines yet and am already sitting at 110k experience, I like to explore and decided to take on Durlags early, now I am beginning to wonder what happens when I get to cap and if I could take capped players with lower level NPCs and boost them so to speak.

Anyone else have any info on this?

I guess, not understanding what you are asking. As stated above, your 'Capped' players still take a portion of the XP dolled out every time something XP worthy happens. However, if you have higher levels with lower levels, the higher levels should be able to survive tougher battles. Hence, that would (after a fashion) artificially boost XP for the lower levels.

But no, just because they are capped, doesn't mean that the XP only gets distributed amongst those that haven't reached the cap yet. it gets divided evenly amongst all players in your party regardless of where they are relative to the cap.

Yeah I don't recall BG2 recognizing it but IIRC the extra for BG1 did show up if you installed TotSC after reaching (and surpassing) the BG1 cap. So if you were over the BG1 cap and then installed ToTSC your higher numbers (up to the ToTSC cap) would immediately appear and you could level.
