There's enough to get 6 people to 161,000 each. But is there much spare after that?
Plenty. I'd venture that even without random encounters, there's probably double the amount needed to get 6 x 161,000 available. Not that it's very feasible to get this amount in any one playthrough, but there's definitely enough to get your party to max level even if you're changing party members and other activities that "cost" xp.
Yeah, there are monsters that respawn and random encounters all over the place. There are things that you can do such as pick pocket which fall well outside of the realm of normal game play (not that loads of people don't do it, but it is by no means required) . And there are loads of places that only the most diehard completionists will go. yeah, I'd bet that there is a whole lot of extra XP. I remember one time playing through and I reached the XP cap well before I reached the final battle. And there are certain places that have loads of XP all by themselves (such as Durlag's tower).

What does pickpocketing have to do with gaining xp?
I think you get xp for successful completion of the task. Certainly you get it for most other thief function (disarming traps, opening locks). Am I wrong about that? Do they not give it for successful pick-pocket? Or maybe they figure that free stuff is enough of a reward for the risk?
I hit the 161.000xp at the end of the Durlag quest with 6 characters all the way and i still have to go to the island and then to the final rogue maze (and i didn't farm xp at all).

I think you only get xp from traps and locks. Also, in BG:EE the xp reward has been reduced greatly (I think you only get around 20 xp or so), so it doesn't really contribute much to the overall xp available in the game.
There's plenty to spare. I did a thorough run of BG:EE where I cleared all the maps, killed every monster I came across (except some disappearing spawns and the infinite kobolds at Firewine), and completed all the quests I could get with a high Charisma character while running a full party whenever possible. I didn't go looking for monsters, and once I cleared a map, I didn't go back unless I had to do something there. I didn't have a Thief for the vast majority of the run, so I missed out on some probably insignificant lock/trap experience. I did kill Shandalar and Drizzt.
Here's how much experience everyone had just before the final battle:
PC (Cleric) - 220,670 XP Dorn - 218,246 XP Neera - 218,058 XP Rasaad - 217,491 XP Viconia - 212,513 XP Alora - 111,163 XP (I recruited her almost entirely for the ToSC content; she and Viconia were sometimes swapped out for other NPCs.)
Despite being so much over the XP cap, none of my characters gained a level beyond what the XP cap allows.
While there is essentially an unlimited amount of XP when you factor in random encounters, I'm rather curious how much there is just from predetermined things.

Are they reduced? That kinda sucks. Playing Classic with Tutu and depending on the difficulty involved I am getting anywhere from 16 - 40 xp per trap/lock. So I grant you, not nearly enough to impact the bottom line. I guess I was just thinking that, if you pick-pocketed every single non hostile in the game AND you actually got XP for that as well, that might add up. But then again, maybe not.
In the end, I'd say that there is a variable amount based on the number of random encounters. As for calculating the exact amount, that would merely be a function of adding up each encounter and adding in all of the quest XP. I wouldn't want to do that, but I bet someone could.
And there are sites that list the amount of XP per quest. Dudleyville I think does it. And it even gives the XP for each encounter. So.... There you go....
At the end of the day, I'd say probably at minimum more than twice the cap (considering 6 party members). But that is a total stab in the dark.

Oh, sorry, then I don't know if they reduced them or if they're still the same. I thought I remembered the xp rewards for traps/locks being higher in tutu.
Unless you deliberately farm random encounters(resting or travelling) there's roughly 200k xp times six characters in the game. In my playthrough with my avenger I managed to clock the 161k xp cap for my entire party in the undercity of baldur's gate(i.e. just before the final boss). However, I hadn't completed the werewolf island nor killed Drizzt, Shandalar or Elminster but completed pretty much everything else, including the new sidequest areas for Neera, Dorn and Rasaad.

No that do not suck.
In vanilla game, neither traps nor locks nor pickpocket gave xp.
With the Tutu (or BGT - I do not remind properly) XP, you can get out of Candlekeep with a rogue level 3 ... This might have been modified in the lastest releases, but in the versions I have played, I clearly remember the first locks giving between 750 or 1500 xp ...
Tutu sucks, yeah. BGT also,
They have messed up with too much things (death spells and flesh to stone given to Semaj, ...).
That's why I was expecting this release to give the original feel (and that's great - even if there are annoying bugs that still remain to be fixed).
If you do a through run without farming you get around 220k to 230k XP for each character. The last time I tried I finished with charname at 233k xp at the end. I really didn't feel it got unbalanced for removing the XP cap. It means an extra level at most for your chars.
