Fighter suddenly lost 40ish HP from their max

May contain small spoilers.

A friend and I are playing through multiplayer together, and he is running a pure fighter. When we entered cloakwood mine, he had 71ish HP, and sometime during the dungeon his max became 36. We noticed it after completing the boss fight.

There were no status effects on the character, and he doesnt appear to have lost any levels (he was 5), but we rested anyway to see if that would fix it. When it didnt, we played through a bit more to level him up. He received full HP and the correct CON bonus, but didnt restore his lost HP.

So, what could have happened? We fought one Battle Horror, and the only thing I can think of is they have some kind of HP drain ability, but I couldnt find anything about that online. Any help is appreciated.

    what level is he?
Did he ever cast L. Minor drain, aid or any other HP boosting spell or potion?

He is now level six, and has been using Buckley's Buckler pretty much the entire game which raises CON by one, but I dont believe he's ever used any other HP raiser

Any wild magic cast that might have halved HPs?

No wild mages in party, Neera turned herself into a squirrel 3 loads in a row so we booted her, but that was -much- earlier on in the game.

Double check the character sheet. No level drains, curses, etc...?

And what is his current HP, level, constitution, and are you playing on normal so you always have max HP?

No status effects except the ones from his equipment. No cursed equipment either for that matter.

HP 34, LVL 6, CON 18, we've been on normal the entire time.

It seems to me like the game just isn't calculating his HD, only his CON modifier for levels 2-6. Just have no idea why.

Try having a look with shadowkeeper to see what his base hp actually are. And if they are too low then all I can suggest is editing them back up to where he should be.

Is he the main character? If not try killing him and raising him.

70hp for a lvl5 character is ridiculously high, it would even out at 14hp per level, which means he had 18 con and max hitpoint rolls at every level. (d10+4 from Con per level)
So he was probably on drugs and/or spells, or you used a lower difficulty/mod that gives max HP on level up which expired (possibly due to an update) and recalculated gained hitpoints.

The buckler with +1 Con would up his HP bonus per level to +5, meaning 5 hitpoints difference, that shouldn't be it.

@Drugar, he said he was playing on normal, which means he would get max hp per level.

'HP 34, LVL 6, CON 18, we've been on normal the entire time.'

@Drugar I was thinking it had to do with the hit point calculation too, since right now his base HP is 10.

@moopy I will try this. If all else fails, I'll just use the console to level up a new character since I dont have shadow keeper working yet.

    Thanks everyone.

@sereph: Do you have an earlier save or did you check one when this problem occured? Did the HP show up properly then?

Have you checked to see if his actual HP has gone down? i.e. could it be that it just shows a lower amount but he can take the full 70+?

I hate to ask this because it is so obvious but......

Are you sure there isn't a dead pixel somewhere involved? 6X14 = 84. You indicate he has 34. Is it possible that someone is miss-reading the number? Maybe the screen is freaking out and not reporting the full 8 and so it looks like a 3?

Would recommend that you reload the game. If that doesn't solve it, export the character and load it up in another game just to see how many hit points.

Third, remove the shield and see what happens to hit points. You'll get em back once he re-equips. I'd also go to a temple and see if they can remove curse or otherwise heal him up.
