My Cat Killed Tarnesh!!

SO I'm starting yet another new game and I get to the Friendly Arm Inn. A very suspect individual (SPOILER) decides to approach me...

One thing leads to another, and as I'm starting to have a little difficulty with hitting him with Imoen and my Cleric/Mage PC, I say WHAT THE HELL, send my familiar in and she saves the day!!

If my cat had a information tab, it would say "Most powerful vanquished: Tarnesh" XD

Never underestimate the power of the cat.

I used NI to give my Pseudo Dragon the PSDCLAW weapon and made its thac0 actually 13 like the description says. My pseudo dragon looked at Tarnesh and laughed at him and his mirror images. Then it went up to him and put him to sleep with one hit. The end (for Tarnesh anyway).

I later realized that those two simple adjustments made the pseudo dragon a very useful (and probably overpowered) member of the party. Even nasty things like ankhegs become KO'd after just a few hits.

Familiars are great additions to the protagonist mage class. I've always liked the Ferret, mostly for its pickpocketing, but the Cat and Rabbit are other favorites. Mostly because of their resistances combined with stealth for scouting ahead and dealing with mages and magical traps :)

~~ Disclaimer: list not entirely accurate~~

Lawful/Neutral Good - Pseudo Dragon, -2 AC, 24 HP, 50% magic resistance, renders victims unconscious (no KO current patch)(actual 17 THACO> should be 13 THACO), casts Blur

Chaotic Good - Fairy Dragon, 4 AC, 24 HP, 32% magic resistance, casts Invisibility 10' Radius & Mirror Image 1/day

Lawful Neutral - Ferret, 0 AC, 24 HP, 50% magic resistance, 75% Pickpocket, 40% Stealth, 20% Detect Traps

True Neutral - Rabbit, -4 AC, 24 HP, 50% Detect Traps, 30% Stealth,
75% resistance to fire, cold, electricity

Chaotic Neutral - Cat, 0 AC, 24 HP, 99% stealth, 50% magic resistance

Lawful Evil - Imp, 2 AC, 18 HP, Polymorphs, 25% magic resistance

Neutral Evil - Dust Mephit, 6 AC, 24 HP, Casts Glitterdust 2/day, 10% magic resistance

Chaotic Evil - Quasit, 2 AC, 24 HP, Casts Horror, 25% magic resistance

@JTM Unfortunately many of those descriptions are in error. The pseudo dragon for instance has 17 thac0 instead of 13 and also does not have an attack that KO's enemies. The rabbit actually has 24 hp instead of 16. A lot of the in game familiar descriptions are not accurate.

    Thanks, I updated it a bit. :)

Big bad warrior goes to the Afterlife. A fellow asks him how he died. "Um, a, ah, um a cat killed me. Yeah a very big, large, ferocious cat killed me, yeah that's it!

The Pseudo Dragon also lacks the 50% resistance and it has but an Ac of 4. It has a regeneration and movement bonus, though.

I seem to recall that the kitty has a 30% pick pocket skill, making it decent at emptying your own inventory (with micro management on his frequent failures) if nothing else.

The Dust Mephit also has the Glass Dust ability as an innate twice a day, as well as Glitterdust as a spell. It also regenerates (or at least mine does!)

Really? That AC sucks, that takes away one of it's best features, it's meant to me a melee familiar, unlike the spell casting and thief ones

Does anyone know the filenames for the familiars so I can look them up in NearInfinity and see what they actually do? I can only find their filenames as items (i.e. when in your backpack), which doesn't really help.

I wonder how many of the current familiar abilities in BGEE are bugged and how many are intended (so scale familiars down for BGEE), though, so am a bit hesitant to change the existing values myself. Either way, though, either the descriptions are bugged or the abilities are (or both, LOL!)

    @Oxford_Guy They're both messed up.

The familiar .CRE files are FAMPSD, FAMFAIR, FAMFER, FAMRAB, FAMCAT, FAMIMP, FAMDUST, and FAMQUAS.

OMG!!!!!!!! I just looked at the other familiars in NI. Almost none of the in game descriptions are accurate!!!! These things really need some serious work in the descriptions department.

It would make sense for the Devs to bug fix their abilities first *then* update the descriptions...

According to NearInfinity a Dust Mephit has 100% resistance to normal and magic fire, i.e. is immune to Fireball, LOL!

@Jalily - Is there are Bug Report thread on the messed-up Familiars? I'd like to know what the values are *meant* to be in BGEE
  • JalilyJalily Member Posts: 4,681
@Oxford_Guy There is, but it's the one you already found. @CamDawg is still working on them, and I don't know what the final values will be.

@Jalily - oh okay, I thought there might be a thread that listed what the abilities are *meant* to be, nut I guess only the Devs would know that, as it's quite possible the familiars are not meant to have the same abilities as in SoA for BGEE and are meant to be scaled back a little.

I am even more confused now.

Do the stats at the top of the post accurately reflect the familiars current state of being?

Soooo can someone list what the Cat's abilities are in actuality, and not what the description says? It would be hilarius if her hide in shadows is not 99 percent... she keeps FAILING IT

Or maybe I'm just getting unlucky...

There are rather severe penalties, like, for example, -40 in broad daylight or something like that.

Haha, welcome to a hidden secret to the early mage! (Hell, I use my familiar all through BG1, and he has his moments in BG2; I love the invis-wand-run back to the party screaming like a little girl, sneak attack) I love sending in my mini-dragon with mirror image up and tanking for me. He sets 'em up, I knock 'em down.

Edit: What am I doing wrong with my pictures on this site as they are showing them in thumbnail form only, making people click on them to see the full image? This is the internet, people never click on the images!

@Mykra You need to click the insert option available on the thumbnail after uploading is complete, then click delete to discard the thumbnail.

Thanks Edwin, I'll make sure to do that from now on!

What is "NI" and where can I download it?
    Thanks!
