It's only taken 12 odd years ...

But I've finally finished BG1. I played it first on a holiday and got up to BG somewhere but the holiday ended. Some time later I finished BGII extensively and then played NWN 1 and 2 extensively but never finished BG1. Until today.

Bit of an anticlimax without cutscenes on the ipad but I you tubed the final vid which was a decent alternative. Perhaps add built in YouTube streaming of cutscenes at appropriate times or even just the link?

Fair to say that I rofflestomped the boss; I didn't even notice him going down but apparently my charname took care of him in just a few rounds while the others were mostly taking care of the others.

Did I power game? Hell yes, 95 point berserker (6)/Druid (10) with something like -15 AC vs slashing and grandmastery in scimitars. Probably one of the most powerful builds in BG1 IMO (though 8/9 might have been better in retrospect but I wanted the extra level 5 slot and didnt want to wait so long for fighter abilities even though I didn't use spells that much in the end though I'm not sure if that split would be able to get GM).

(Total xp, % kills, xp value, number of kills. Last chapter then overall, time with party)
Charname: 57%, 45%, 41610, 25. 60%, 59%, 524693, 810. 137 days, 8 hours
Coran: 15%, 21%, 10945, 12. 14%, 12%, 126620, 170. 71 days, 21 hours
Dorn: 16%, 16%, 11735, 9. 14%, 14%, 128158, 196. 97 days, 12 hours
Viconia: 11%, 5%, 8035, 3. 4%, 4%, 37358, 62. 99 days, 22 hours (with 19 strength belt and stupifier)
Neera: 0%, 7%, 455, 4. 4%, 8%, 39665, 117. 101 days, 19 hours
Edwin: 0%, 3%, 70, 2. 1%, 1%, 15875, 15. 38 days, 20 hours

Coran did well to catch up and I definitely support the idea of him being the best NPC in the game. Results are skewed due to soloing high XP stuff at the start (I was 6/6 when I got Neera iirc). In dungeons I often took charname solo just to avoid reloads from traps killing off squishies who had bad HP from picking up everyone at level 6. Boots of speed also helped charname get to fights faster.

I do think maybe I didn't utilise my wizards enough but its harder to target AoEs safely on the ipad (or I'm must older and stupider) and it seemed slower to pause and target rather than just letting the tanks clean up with an occasional fireball thrown on top if not risky.

I'm planning on a "good" insane difficulty run through now. After that ill try a no reload hardcore evil run.

I feel you, though my reasons for never finishing were different. I got the game when it originally came out, but due in large part to the crappy journal and lack of map notes I always ended up stopping about the time I hit the city of Baldur's Gate. When Shadows of Amn came out, I managed to get through it thanks to the improvements it made to the game. I've yet to play through Throne of Bhaal however (looking forward to that when the next Enhanced Edition comes out).
Thanks to this new edition, I've almost completed Chapter 5 and am on course to complete the game. If not for my slight vacation to take on the Tales of the Sword Coast content, I'd probably be in or through the trip back to Candlekeep.

So I swapped it around and have been trying to get going on a good core rules no reload run. Playing a Blade which is going to take a while to get off the ground I think.

After making some progress Khalid took a few hits from a dread wolf and lost morale. We killed the dread wolf but Khalid turned around a killed charname with his bow. I'm thinking those two can go jump in a lake.

    Poor Khalid :(

I'm using him in a current playthrough, and even with my 8 cha CHARNAME I have yet to see him flee in terror. He is a beast with a bastard sword, his great dex/con and Gauntlets of Ogre Power. Quite possibly my new favorite BG1 NPC.

First time I tried to use Khalid in BG:EE. First real fight we got into was against the evil priest southwest of Beregost. He got down to half HPs and Jaheria was healing him and before the healing spell went off he ran off into a bunch of hobgoblins and died. I left him there.

Besides, everyone *knows* Dorn is a terrible NPC.

You need to lighten up bud. It was meant as a joke. I'm aware of how illogical my post was; that was part of the joke.

I'll admit though, I don't understand your fix.

    Gratz!!!

My original "First" run through, I had Xzar and Montaron with me. So that kind of handicapped me for the final battle and really left me in dire straits so I just stopped.

Next few times, i learned my lesson. But at some point after BG2 came out, I stopped "Finishing" the game once Charname reached the XP Cap and merely switched over. So this time, I am really looking forward to finishing proper again.

Funny thing about Dorn, was in my play through with him I got him early on purpose and then he proceeded to get very very bad HP rolls, so he was very fragile for me and kind of sucked (except that he chunked everything he hit). Finally on one of his level ups I adjusted the slider for max XP just so he wouldn't go down like a mage all the time and cost me so much in Temple fees.

Anyway, on topic. I had the opposite experience. I finished BG1 years ago, but could never finish BG2. On my last attempt, I got the furthest I ever had, then BG:EE released and I'm playing that now. I'll probably finally finish BG2 when the Enhanced Edition releases. Though for me, I have a harder time getting into and advancing the plot than in BG1. In the first game it was so personal to CHARNAME, all these assassins, people out to get me, it spurred me on. In BG2 I'm like lost.. ok so you took Imoen, now I'm supposed to go all crazy trying to get her back? Umm ... sure.. ok.. hey look at all these side quests, guess I'll go do that for a while until I stumble upon a way to get her or come up with 10k gold that I don't spend on new goodies on my party.

Yeah that was an over reaction, sorry about that.
  • the_spyderthe_spyder Member Posts: 5,018
@SirK8, you don't have to be all about rescuing Imoen. You can be after Irenicus because of the whole 'He tortured you nearly to death several times' thing and are looking for some payback. Or, if you happen to be of the goodly persuasion, you could "Try and stop the Bad Man. The BAD, Bad man. Before he goes and hurts any other fuzzy bunnies and Wood Nymphs".

    Just a suggestion.

Motives for chasing Irenicus aside, the fact you can basically do 80% of the game in Chapter 2 is a great motivator to... not save Imoen for a very long time.
  • the_spyderthe_spyder Member Posts: 5,018
Oh, absolutely. Every time I play through I try to do every single thing in Chapter 2. LOOOOONG after I have the gold necessary to advance, i am still finishing off every last quest available.
  • QuartzQuartz Member Posts: 3,853
@moopy No problem at all. I have my moments on here, too.
  • SirK8SirK8 Member Posts: 527
@the_spyder - yeah I get that you can go about it for the revenge on Irenicus, but the immersion just wasn't there for me like it was in the first game. I started the game being *told* I was captured and tortured, sure there were some indications before you have control of your character, and I liked the whole escaping the dungeon, I thought that was overall exciting, and I was driven to do it... but afterwards yeah... now Irenicus is locked up as far as CHARNAME knows right... I just didn't feel very immersed, and then I was just bombarded with quests at every turn, I would zone and bam, new quest, so aside from the lack of immersion or interest in the main plot, I was also handed a lot of distraction. I still like the game play and racking up XP and loot and forming a party, but it just didn't feel the same as the first game. Party banter was great too though.

In BG1, I'm told by my foster father that we need to leave in a hurry and I don't know why, then we are ambushed and I watch as he is murdered, then at every turn I am hunted by assassins... yeah CHARNAME is pissed and this is personal... iron crisis or not, I'm hunting this guy down! I will definitely play through BG2 once I finish a character in BG:EE that I want to carry through, I may not even wait for BG2:EE to play through.

@SirK8. Yeah, we have very different impressions of both games. But that is OK. I love em both and am looking forward to taking my latest Charname all the way to the throne.

Lol, bashing Khalid never gets old.

I've managed to progress to the bandit camp.

Neera chunked herself with a wild surge and after Jaheira died for the second time I left her at the bottom of Nashkel mines and picked up Xan instead.

Nimbul managed to take down 3 toons when he caught me unawares on my way back for some recuperation in the tavern.

For raising i really wish there was some combination of:
    - higher GP cost
    - -1 con penalty
    - xp penalty
    - special component required
    - body to recover and carry
    - time limit before decomposition

    Currently running with:
    Charname Blade
    Imoen
    Khalid
    Kivan
    Branwen
    Xan

@Wowo, huh? How could you get a berserker 6/druid 10 with only 186,000 xp to work with? Did you remove the xp cap? If you cheated, then of course Sarevok and Co. were easy to beat.
  • WowoWowo Member Posts: 2,064
161,000 is xp cap and it fits. I play on ipad so no possibility to mess with the game at all.

And just like that ... Splat. Seniyad's call lightning to the face. Oh well, time to start again. I might try an illusionist/cleric this time ...

How regular is it to have a character splatted beyond raise? Currently it just seems too easy to sacrifice the npcs and then raise them at a temple. Doesn't seem too hardcore to me though it's fun all the same.

Chunking only happens on Crit hits that kill I think. someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but if this is the case all helm wearing party members will not be chunked meaning your mages and theives are really the only ones to watch for.

A character should only get chunked when his/her hit points drop to -10 or below. On normal difficulty this usually only happens on criticals, but on insane it's a lot more common.
