Can I activate my pre-purchased copy of BG:EE on Steam?

I noticed that BG:EE is for sale on Steam now, so I'm wondering if there is some sort of key I can get to activate the game through Steam so I'll have it forever and ever and ever and ever and ever.

The Steam version was put up by Atari, not Beamdog, so it's somewhat out of the control of the developers. Beamdog is currently working with Atari in an attempt to get Steam keys for those who purchased through Beamdog, but there has been no announcement on progress.

With the Beamdog version, you already have your game forever and ever. All you need to do is make a backup of the installation directory on a DVD or hard disk. You can move this directory from one computer to another without having to login to Beamdog if you run the game from Baldur.exe. And if you want to update, just login with the email you gave.
Why would you need a Steam DRM when you already have all the freedom and flexibility?

Couldn't have said it better mysself, @Isaya. Everyone seems to be obsessed with Steam as off lately. Btw, if the Steam servers go down, you basically lose all of your games, so no, with Steam you don't own your games 'forever and ever and ever'. Boggles my mind some people have this way of thinking.

... Which is to say you don't trust Beamdog? :(

Anyway, I'm not sure how successful anyone will be in getting Steam keys, but Trent made a comment that people should take the issue up with Atari (some contact details are also on that page), since they are the ones responsible for the Steam version being available, updates, etc.

I would assume he has limited sway over the issue since Beamdog doesn't own the rights to Baldur's Gate (again, that's Atari).
