I recall in 'vanilla' BG1, though, neutral characters would still whine a lot at high reputation, and leave permanently (i.e. not just stand around waiting for you to come back, but disappear entirely) if you happened to kick them out when at 19/20 rep. Does anyone know if that's still the case, or if it applies to the new NPCs as well?
I pretty much always run with 20 reputation, and I've noticed that none of the neutral characters whine anymore (Branwen and Neera in my current party). But I haven't tried kicking them out temporarily, so I can't vouch for what might happen.

Haven't noticed any whining, but then I've only had "good" neutral companions (Jaheira/Khalid/Branwen) along so far. As can be seen in the .pdf manual on page 20, neutral companions only have negative reactions on rep 5 or lower, the breaking point being 1. At 16+ they are actually happy.
Ahh, I somehow didn't know that they'd rereleased the manual for BG:EE. The original manual indicated that neutral characters were actually unhappy at rep 19 and 20, and never actually had a status of 'happy'.
I'm not sure the new system makes sense -- after all, why would a good character be happy if you were just generally well-liked, while a neutral character is only pleased if you're a glowing beacon of righteousness? -- but I suppose it's less annoying than having Jaheira constantly telling me that she doesn't "like the way this group is turning out" when I've helped too many people.

Really? I was under the impression that neutral characters never left due to reputation.
A neutral character is more likely to leave a disreputable party because it affects their own self-interests in an adverse way, whereas a neutral character benefits from traveling with a famously heroic group (free drinks, cheaper gear, etc.).
The reputation table was changed for BGEE so that neutral characters would be happy at high reputation, because otherwise their "Happy" dialogue would never be played.
If at any point you discover that it isn't working like this, it's probably a bug and worth reporting (unless there are extraneous circumstances, like you forgot that you equipped a Helm of Opposite Alignment for instance).

Neutral: Leaves at 1 Rep
Evil: Leaves at 19-20 Rep
It's that simple. Neutral will complain a lot at 19 and 20 but never leave.
