The Java detection says I have an older version of Java installed. I re-ran the Java update, it seems to work fine although I never get the final window "installation successful - close". When I test again, it does not see my update Java and the .jar file (I downloaded the 1.1.0 version you told me) does not run and displays the same message.

I will investigate further.
Based on what you wrote, I would recommend uninstalling all versions of Java from your computer (using the instructions on the link in my previous post), and reinstall the latest using the offline installer from the following page:
If you have a 64 bit OS, install both 32 and 64 Java, or, even better, just 32 if you do not use 64 bit browsers (e.g. I use 32bit Firefox in Windows 7 64bit, so I've installed just the 32 bit version of Java).
Ok. It is the installation of the newer version of Java that does not work, the installer runs and then stalls and never finishes. My computer illiterate guess is that some firewall / security system is blocking it. I have no clue and no real intention to fiddle with that. I am unkeen to un-install my current Java, because I might still then be blocked from re-installing a newer version.
Is there any older NearInfinity version that might be compatible with my Java version? (which is Java 2 - version 1.5.0)
edit: actually what might work is if, without uninstalling my current Java, I try the offline installation of the last java version. Firewall should not block the .exe anymore...
@Erg: ok, I managed to install a more recent version of Java from my intranet (v6.24). The latest on java.com is v7.11. This was however enough for the .jar to execute, I gave the path to the chitin.key and... it works!!
I really have no clue how to use NI though. Will figure out. Thanks again. What I am trying to achieve really is create special items that will match the personaility/background of the PC, and then CLUA them into the game.
If you need assistance for custom items, you can open a new thread in the Modding section of the forum and I may try and help you, even if I'm not so much of an expert myself. You could also be lucky and receive help from true modders like, for example, in the following thread:
@Erg: really, thanks a lot. I might open up a thread. For instance I copied an Ion Stone, and wanted to edit it so as it would give protection from critical hits like a normal helmet. I did not find it in the list of attributes!
IIRC they already do (or at least they did in vanilla BG2).
Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that any piece of headgear is hard coded to provide protection from critical hits, even if it is not in the description. I believe it is because of a limitation of the engine, and actually it may not even be possible to make a Ion Stone that would not protect from critical hits.

edit: hard luck. After clicking the "Install" button on the Java Setup window... nothing happens. No error message, no stalling, just nothing.
